Having risen to 12th in the world squash rankings, Tesni Evans will travel to her second Commonwealth Games in April looking to shake-up the established order. There are five players ranked above her who can compete at the Gold Coast – the England trio of Laura Massaro (4), Sarah-Jane Perry (8) and Alison Waters (10) along with New Zealand’s Joelle King (9) and Hong Kong’s Annie Au (11) – but she has beaten Massaro and Waters on the professional circuit in the past three months.
Laura Daniels will be hoping to use the experience of becoming a world champion in Australia last year to steer her to a Commonwealth Games gold medal on the Gold Coast in April. The Neath bowler struck gold in Sydney when she followed in the footsteps of fellow Welsh international Kathy Pearce in being crowned World Champion of Champions. Now she hopes to turn her Commonwealth Games debut into another golden experience. Daniels beat Malaysian Emma Firyana Saroji in the final in Sydney two months ago to add the prestigious title to her 2015 World Indoor Singles champion title and her 2016 World Pairs crown in tandem with Jess Simms, who will also be heading down under as part of the 15-strong Team Wales bowls squads.
Six months ago Sammy Lee won gold for Wales at the Commonwealth Games Youth Championships in the Bahamas. Now he is looking to step up into the senior ranks and to do the same thing after being selected as the youngest member of a seven-strong Team Wales boxing squad for the Gold Coast in April. The Swansea boxer first burst onto the scene in 2015 with a dazzling display at the Welsh Championships.
Gareth Evans will be hoping to make it third time lucky when he leads a 16-strong Welsh weightlifting and powerlifting team to the Commonwealth Games in April. Evans, who will be joined on the Gold Coast by his girlfriend, Hannah Powell, finished fourth in Glasgow four years ago, having made his debut in Delhi four years earlier. He also competed for Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Welsh golden swimming greats Jazz Carlin and Georgia Davies will get the chance to defend their Commonwealth Games titles in Australia in April after being selected as part of a 15-strong aquatics team for the Gold Coast. They are the only two of Wales’ five gold medallists in Glasgow four years ago who will be returning to the Games. Rhythmic gymnast Frankie Jones had retired, cyclist Geraint Thomas is unavailable and judo player Natalie Powell will be watching on from home because her sport is not included. Carlin took gold and silver in the 800m and 400m freestyle in Glasgow in 2014, while Davies triumphed in the 50m back and struck silver in the 100m back. They will be joined by the other two Welsh medallists in the pool four years ago, Calum Jarvis and Daniel Jervis.
Wales’ most successful female pole vaulter is hoping to scale even greater heights as she heads for her third Commonwealth Games. Ben Llewellin will be gunning for Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, after securing his place with Team Wales in Australia next April. The 23-year old from Haverfordwest is the number one Olympic skeet shooter (one of the shotgun categories) in the UK and ranked sixth in the world. He recently won ‘Olympic Shooter of the Year 2017’ at the British Shooting Awards.
Three-time World Champion and Olympic gold medal cyclist Dani Rowe has been named in Wales’ Commonwealth Games team having switched allegiance from England. Striker Frank Nouble and goalkeeper Joe Day have a big night ahead of them when Newport County play Morecambe at home this evening (Tuesday, 7.45pm). The Dragons are on the road. Next month they will take on Edinburgh in the Guinness Pro 14 at Ebbw Vale’s Eugene Cross Park, rather than at Rodney Parade. Geraint Powell says it will lose money – but gain fans and regional momentum. When the Dragons announced on 5 January that they would be taking their home Pro14 match against Edinburgh to Ebbw Vale RFC’s Eugene Cross Park, there was always going to be a predictable, emotional and ideological response from some quarters. There is no identity ambiguity about playing a home match at Ebbw Vale RFC. This is regional rugby for the many, not “super” club rugby for the few. This is a Gwent regional team, and the city of Newport is as much Gwent as the rest of the region.
Mica Moore has been named by Team GB for next month’s Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The ex-Wales sprinter will partner Mica McNeill as part of a 10-strong bobsleigh squad bound for South Korea.

Faryna went toe-to-toe with 6ft 2ins Canadian enforcer Mathieu Gagnon at a time when Devils needed a spark. Gagnon, who fought Cardiff’s Tyson Strachan earlier this season, has been building a reputation as the toughest […]
Carlos Carvalhal has vowed to keep battling to bring in new players after Jurgen Klopp left Swansea having picked two fights and lost both as well as his team’s unbeaten 18-match record. Swansea manager Carvalhal paid tribute to his team’s instincts as they scrapped their way to a priceless 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Monday night. The unexpected triumph has not yet turned their season around, but it has transformed the outlook. Now, only three points adrift of safety and only six from halfway, they will believe there are at least half a dozen clubs they can pick off in the remaining 14 matches of the Premier League season.
With the high-flying 1st XI kicking their heels thanks to their opponents’ cup commitments, it was left to the lower Penarth Hockey Club sides to enjoy a moment in the spotlight as they went unbeaten in the GoCrea8 League.

If you think NFL is not popular in Wales, then you should have been in Cardiff for the NFL UK Live Tour.
