Tomos Williams will make his Six Nations debut against France in Paris on Friday night after getting the nod for the scrum-half spot. Meirion Evans says that contesting the full Irish Tarmac Championship this year is “a dream come true” as he prepares for the opening round of the series in his Melvyn Evans Motorsport run Hyundai i20 R5. The 23-year old Lampeter driver will begin his Irish campaign on next month’s Galway International Rally – and despite more than 25 R5 cars expected on the entry list, Evans will be aiming for a strong start after scoring an excellent podium finish on last year’s Cork 20 International. Co-driver Jonathan Jackson will return to partner Evans for what will be their sixth season together, with the strong partnership inside the car one of the keys to a strong end to 2018.
Former Wales centre Elen Evans believes the depth of the current Wales women’s squad is stronger than ever as they bid to overcome injury problems ahead of the Six Nations. With No.8 Sioned Harries and prop Brea Leung both ruled out of the tournament, coach Rowland Phillips will be forced to test his resources when Wales start their campaign in France at the Altrad Stadium in Montpellier, on Saturday 2 February, kick off 8.00pm. Oli McBurnie has warned Garry Monk that Swansea City are no longer the naïve rookies of the start of the season. The Scotland striker will be looking to add to his 13 goals so far this season when former Swansea manager Monk brings his Birmingham City side to the Liberty Stadium tonight (Tues). It will be Monk’s first return as a manager since he was sacked three years ago, but McBurnie believes the chances of a happy homecoming are remote.
Multi-talented endurance athlete Andy Davies has been selected to represent Great Britain at the IAU/ITRA Trail World Championships in June. As well as being a hugely talented fell, trail and mountain runner, the mid-Wales based runner is equally at home on the roads.
Jay Harris has been named Welsh Boxer of the Year at the Welsh Area Council Awards – beating Gavin Gwynne and Tony Dixon to the top prize. Harris – who is due to defend his Commonwealth flyweight title on March 1 – picked up the award in a year he extended his unbeaten professional record to 14 fights.
