RYA Cymru Wales is very saddened to announce the passing of Chief Executive Phil Braden too early in life following a period of illness, aged 58. He leaves behind his wife Deborah and two young daughters. Phil took over the helm of Welsh boating in February 2016, after a top-level career as a global telecoms executive. He was a lifelong sailor and a former Commodore of Llandudno Sailing Club.
Joe Ledley is looking for a new club after opting to terminate his contract at Derby County. The 32-year-old had played just four games for the Rams since Frank Lampard took over as manager during the summer.
Owain Doull celebrated his first professional victory as he led a Welsh one-two at the Herald Sun Tour in Australia. The Cardiff-born rider crossed the lead with Team Sky team-mate Luke Rowe after the duo attacked from a breakaway with 5km left on stage three. Rowe graciously told Doull he could take the honours at the end of the 161.3km stage to give the 2016 Olympic track champ his first win in the pro ranks.
The New Saints were amongst the WPL clubs making late Deadline Day moves to bolster their squads after securing the signing of highly-rated winger Billy Whitehouse. The 22-year-old moves to Park Hall from Northern Premier League outfit Tadcaster Albion after starting his career at Doncaster Rovers before earning a move to Leeds United. Despite being […]
Josh Navidi – Wales’ first and only son of an Iranian wrestler – is confident he can pin a giant French pack to the canvass tonight and win by submission. The Cardiff Blues flanker returns from injury for a key mission in Wales’ back row as the Six Nations starts in Paris with heavy expectation on both sides. Navidi is always unmissable on any field, with his dark dreadlocks flying, but he is certain to catch the eye this evening – a small figure by Test blindside flanker standards trying to combat the biggest pack of forwards the French have ever assembled.
Swansea City’s transfer deadline day ended in chaotic confusion as three players left the club, two more were stranded at the 11th hour, and fans voiced their anger on social media. Deals to take Daniel James to Leeds United and Leroy Fer to Aston Villa collapsed late on after Wilfried Bony, Jefferson Montero and Tom Carroll all left the club. No-one moved in the other direction as the Swans contrived something even their supporters thought was impossible – a deadline day even more shambolic than the previous one.
Bluebirds past, present and future – a weekly Dai-Sport football column by Terry Phillips Past . . . . . Merthyr Tydfil-born Derek Showers, who often attends Bluebirds matches, will surely be at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday when two of his former clubs clash. Former Wales international Showers, now aged 65, started his playing […]
Menna Fitzpatrick made it double gold at the Para Alpine Skiing World Championships after winning the visually impaired super-G event. Wales’ Paralympic champ and guide Jen Kehoe followed up their victory in the downhill on Wednesday with another golden run at Sella Nevea.
Wales Wheelchair Basketball Association’s launch of the 3 x 3 programme has been hailed a huge success as it begins the bid to qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The launch of the programme, supported by Disability Sport Wales, saw a talent ID day held in Aberystwyth last weekend which welcomed Wales’ performance athletes to showcase their skills.
Wales Women have been told to toughen up by head coach Rowland Philips who has made two changes to his team for their Six Nations opener against France in Montpellier on Saturday night (9pm local time). Scarlets pair Hannah Jones and Alisha Butchers return to the side. Jones will partner Alicia McComish in the centre, while Butchers returns from injury to start on the blindside flank. There is a reshuffle in the back row with Beth Lewis starting at No.8 in place of injured Sioned Harries and Manon Johnes starting on the openside. “Physicality will be key against France on Saturday,” said Phillips.
Remember Wales partying like it was 1999, in . . . er, 1999? Harri Morgan does. But things were different in those days, he argues. The man who has turned annual hope into genuine expectation is in his final Six Nations and Wales are going to miss him. The 1999 Five Nations tournament lives in the memory for a multitude of reasons. It was the final tournament before the door was opened to Italy, and the last time Scotland reigned victorious.
Sarah Jones headed Down Under this week with a major landmark in her mind as she continues to push for selection for the 2020 Olympic Games. The 91-times capped Welsh hockey international, who has two Commonwealth Games already under her belt, made her Team GB debut in China in November at the Champions Trophy. Six games there took her total international cap tally to 97 and now she hopes to reach three-figures when the FIH Pro League gets underway in New Zealand.
The transfer window for the JD Welsh Premier League closes at midnight tonight and if reports are to be believed, it could be a busy day as clubs make their final preparations for Phase 2 of season which commences this weekend. Title rivals Connah’s Quay and The New Saints are both expected to announce new […]
Dan Salmon, one of the golden heroes of Team Wales’ record medal haul at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last year, will be the headline act when Wales hosts the 2019 Atlantic Championships. Salmon partnered Marc Wyatt to win the Commonwealth crown in the men’s pairs and he has been selected for that event with another member of Team Wales in Australia, Ross Owen, the reigning Welsh Indoor champion. Salmon will also compete in the men’s singles, while Owen will also feature in the fours.
The Six Nations is about to begin. All eyes will be focussed on Paris where Wales start the ball rolling against France. For Robin Davey, though, his eyes are green and envious of the Ireland team he predicts will win it all over again. Irish rugby is on the crest of a wave – Leinster supreme in Europe and the national team rivalling the All Blacks at the top of the world rugby tree. And I’m backing Ireland to go all the way again by winning the Six Nations title.
Rabbi Matondo believes his move to the Bundesliga will help his development after he joined Schalke in a near £10million deal from Manchester City. The 18-year-old former Cardiff City youth player has moved to Germany in a four-and-a-half year deal hoping to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Mesut Ozil and Leroy Sane. Matondo never appeared for the Etihad outfit but made his Wales debut in the defeat in Albania last November.
Warren Gatland has welcomed the idea of promotion and relegation within the Six Nations as World Rugby mull over new plans for a global rugby championship. The Wales coach – who has named Tomos Williams for his first Six Nations start against France on Friday night – has no concerns about replacing the existing teams in the tournament with new ones. His only condition would be the introduction of play-offs to ensure countries coming up are better than those on their way down.
Both managers were left frustrated after Newport County’s goalless draw against Port Vale at Rodney Parade. County have earned only one win in their last eight League Two matches, while Vale manager Neil Aspin was so fed up he resigned this morning. Cardiff-born Lee Nogan, a former Wales international and older brother of ex-Bluebirds striker […]
Swansea’s Luca Mai Lane-Hopkins is among 27 athletes selected to represent Team GB at the Sarajevo 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival from 9-16 February. One of five teenagers given support by the British Ski and Snowboard National Foundation two years ago, Lane-Hopkins has already represented the UK at the World Junior Snowboard Championships and the World Rookie Tour finals. Although she started snowboarding when she was five, she only turned to freestyle two years ago.
Wales’ snow queen Menna Fitzpatrick has struck gold in the visually impaired downhill at the Para Alpine World Championships in Italy. The 19-year-old from Macclesfield and guide Jen Kehoe beat fellow Brits Kirsty Gallagher and Gary Smith in the event which had been postponed on Tuesday due to dangerous conditions.
