The 26-year-old beat Canada’s Danielle Letourneau in four games – 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7 – in her second-round match. Evans is seeded No 2 for the $51,200 tournament at the Cleveland Racquet Club. She received a bye in the first round.

Cardiff City will not have to face in-form Wales star David Brooks when Bournemouth visit Neil Warnock’s side on Saturday night – much to the manager’s relief. Brooks – whose brilliance this season has made him the best young player in the Premier League according to Warnock – is set to be sidelined for four to five weeks with an ankle injury. Neil Warnock has claimed some of those negotiating on behalf of his transfer targets may have been using the Emiliano Sala circumstances to drive up their prices.
