Elfyn Evans made a great start to Rally Chile, but had dropped from third to seventh place by the end of the opening day of the new FIA World Rally Championship event. Co-driven by Scott Martin, the M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC driver – like many of his rivals – struggled to find a confident rhythm in the wet and slippery gravel conditions, with the day’s penultimate stage in particular costing Evans a lot of time. Because of this, what could have been fifth place became seventh, as the Dolgellau ace fell behind Kris Meeke (Toyota) and Sébastien Loeb (Hyundai).

Magnificent Merthyr made it seven trophies in six incredible seasons as they became only the third side in the 29-year history of the WRU Premiership to complete a hat-trick of titles, thanks to a 28-24 win at home to RGC 1404 on Friday night. Only Neath (2005-08) and Pontypridd (2012-15) with four successive titles have dominated the top tier of the semi-pro game in such a fashion as the Ironmen since they arrived at the top table in 2016. They came into their penultimate game of the season with a seven point lead over Cardiff and knowing that a victory over RGC 1404 would enable them to hold onto their crown with a game to spare.

This year’s Nicky Grist Stages will be based on the Builth Wells RFC pitch, as the famous rally moves into the centre of Builth Wells town. Taking place on Saturday 13 July, the rally – which this year celebrates 10 years of sponsorship from Abergavenny rally legend Nicky Grist and his highly-respected motorsports safety equipment company – will have its Service Area based on The Bulls’ pitch, with the Start and Finish also in Groe Park, adjacent to the River Wye. With Rally Headquarters at the beautifully renovated Strand Hall on Strand Street, everything will be within sight of the town’s main high street, bringing valuable extra trade to the local independent shops. The event organisers, Quinton Motor Club, predict that up to 1,000 rally visitors will come to Builth Wells that weekend, as the event hosts a round of the Jordan Road Surfacing BTRDA Rally Series for a 32nd consecutive year – as well as the Pirelli Motorsport UK Welsh Forest Rally Championship, FMP Rally Challenge, HRCR Old Stagers Championship and Fiesta ST Trophy.
Jason Pritchard will start the Manx Auto Sport-organised Masterpixel Media Manx National Rally today as favourite – but such is the quality of the double-header Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship entry that the defending champion, series leader, four time event winner and number one seed will need to be at his very best to take the top spot once again. Co-driven by Phil Clarke, the 30-year old North Road Garage Ford Focus WRC05 driver led the event from start to finish last year, and has always had an exceptional feel for the fast, narrow and bump Isle of Man roads. But with full Asphalt Rally Championship points awarded after day one and after day two of this year’s Manx National, his rivals will have even more motivation to halt Pritchard’s outstanding run of success. Six time Asphalt Rally champion Damian Cole started the 2019 season well with a strong second place finish on the Rallynuts National Tour of Epynt, and despite a very good record of four podium finishes (including second in 2015) and two maximum Asphalt Championship points scores, he is still looking for his first Manx National win. The Abergavenny ace won the Dixies Challenge event last weekend, which was his 25th win in his Get Connected/Energizer-backed Ford Focus WRC05 and his 21st victory on Epynt. On the Manx, Cole will be co-driven by Max Freeman for the first time.
Michael Flynn insists all the pressure will be on Mansfield on Sunday after his Newport County side earned a battling but controversial 1-1 draw in the first leg of their play-off semi-final. Padraig Amond ensured County will go to the One Call Stadium on level terms after he scored an 83rd minute equaliser, but both the penalty decision that led to the goal and a first half decision not to send off Newport skipper Mark O’Brien provoked outrage from Flynn’s opposite number David Flitcroft. Newport fell behind to an early goal from CJ Hamilton, but the key moment of the match happened in the sixth minute when referee Charles Breakspear chose only to show a yellow card to O’Brien after he tripped Tyler Walker, who appeared to have a clear run on goal.
