Jess Roberts powered to victory in the opening round of the OVO Energy Tour Series at a rain-lashed Redditch.

Wales’ British Road Race champ saw off the Brother UK – Tifosi OnForm duo of Anna Henderson and Rebecca Durrell in a tight finish.

The 20-year-old from Carmarthen’s victory for Team Breeze matched that of older sister, Amy, who won the Redditch event in 2014.

Pontyclun’s Elynor Backstedt finished 13th in a 19-lap race on a wet and windy Worcestershire circuit.

The 17-year-old crossed the line 12 secs down on her fellow Welsh rider for Storey Racing, just ahead of team founder Dame Sarah Storey.

Roberts and Backstedt lined-up having competed in the two-day Women’s Tour de Yorkshire last week where they finished 39th and 35th respectively in the General Classification.

Elynor Backstedt battled through the tough conditions in Redditch.

Round Two of the men’s and women’s OVO Energy Tour Series takes place in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire on Tuesday 13 May.
