As well as European glory, the Welsh duo will be chasing the British 10,000m title. The event also acts as a trial for the World Athletics Championships in September.

The whiff of revenge is very much in the air in the Wales camp at the World U20 Championships in Argentina. Hot on the heels of their magnificent 30-25 opening victory over the host nation, avenging their 39-15 reverse against the same side at last year’s tournament, they now have reigning champions France in their sights on Saturday.

Wales’ Olympic champ Hannah Mills will spearhead a 17-strong GB team taking part in a Tokyo 2020 test event in August. The event – dubbed Ready Steady Tokyo – is a dress rehearsal for the Games with traditionally only one entry per nation in each of the ten classes.

Wales will have to get back to winning ways against host nation Argentina if they are to make a major impact at the World Rugby Junior Championships which kicks-off today (Tuesday) and is live on S4C. Matt Parry claimed his first points of the Blancpain GT Series season on French soil for the second year running. The Cardiff racer this time shared a hard-earned tenth place in the Paul Ricard 1000km with R-Motorsport team-mates Matthieu Vaxiviere and Maxime Martin.

Ben Davies has defied predictions and boosted Wales’ Euro qualification hopes by joining up with the squad for the key upcoming matches against Croatia and Hungary. The Tottenham defender was originally ruled out because of a groin injury. Wales manager Ryan Giggs left Davies out of his squad for the two games last week, saying the left-back had been troubled by the injury throughout the season.

Wales golfers Ffion Tynan and Darcey Harry have been picked for the Great Britain and Ireland team for the Junior Vagliano Trophy, making up a third of the six-girl squad. The Vagliano Trophy and Junior Vagliano Trophy against teams from mainland Europe will be played at Royal St George’s at the end of the month.

A Welsh Athletics training camp in 2017 was brought to a dramatic end for athlete Melissa Courtney when she was admitted to hospital, delirious and confused. It was the second time a training camp had ended this way for the Poole AC athlete. In 2015 she had been taken ill in Portugal and spent five days in intensive care.

Cardiff Ice Skating Club duo Emily Evans and Maeve Barratt have qualified for the British Solo Ice Dance Championships. The British Ice Skating (BIS) event will see over 100 skaters from the UK competing at Ice Sheffield from July 9th to 12th.

Tenby’s Luke Harries bounced back from the disappointment of losing a national final in the United States to storm to victory in the Welsh Open Youths at Glamorganshire golf club. It caps a remarkable couple of weeks for the West Wales club after an all-Tenby final of the Welsh Ladies Championship with Becky Harries beating Bethan Morris.

Mark Wallace believes Glamorgan can give opponents double the trouble in the T20 Blast this summer after signing Mitch Marsh to go alongside brother Shaun. Mitch – younger brother of Shaun – has been announced as the county’s second overseas player for the Vitality Blast. The all-rounder will join up his fellow Australian Test playing brother from the end of July, after he is released by Australia A.

Vicky Thornley claimed her first victory on her return to competitive rowing at the European Championships in Lucerne. The Olympic silver medallist led from start to finish to win the B race by a comfortable two lengths. Thornley, who has won world silver and European gold since switching from the double sculls, took a break last year after being diagnosed with fatigue from overtraining.

A bizarre touchdown helped the South Wales Warriors break the deadlock to secure a hard fought home victory over the Somerset Wyverns. A punt, which looked to have been touched dead at the Warriors’ 30-yard line, was picked up by Nate Webb who raced 60 yards to score the game’s opening touchdown late in the first quarter as the Wyverns punt team were leaving the field. The opening score left the Wyverns, who seconds earlier had been standing over the ball they thought thought they had grounded, scratching their heads and seemingly crying over spilt milk at Llanharan’s Dairy Field at how the Warriors had taken a 6-0 lead.

After what looked like a pretty disastrous situation on Friday, Elfyn Evans brought both his mechanical and driving skills to the fore to salvage a good result at Rally Portugal – finishing fifth on the event and moving up to fourth in the FIA World Rally Championship drivers’ standings. The Dolgellau driver was down in 20th place after his Ford Fiesta WRC came to a halt with a loose throttle pedal connection. It might be an easy push-it-back-in fix, but it’s a devil of a fault to find – and to only lose four minutes was all credit to his problem fixing capabilities. From then on it was his never give up attitude that paid dividends. He and co-driver Scott Martin started today’s final leg in seventh position, but that became sixth when Esapekka Lappi / Janne Ferme rolled their Citroen C3 WRC. And then Kris Meeke / Seb Marshall gifted Evans another position when they crashed their Toyota Yaris WRC on the final stage.

Dewi Lake leads Wales U20 into the World Rugby Junior Championships in Argentina this week and admits they are stepping into the lion’s den. Their opening game on Tuesday will be against the host nation Argentina and four days later they face reigning world champions France. Their pool campaign finishes with a game against the explosive Fijians and all of Wales’ games will be live on S4C.

James Tomlinson and Sarah Omoregie were both in personal best breaking form at the Halle International Throws meeting in Germany. Pembrokeshire powerhouse Tomlinson hit the 60metre mark for the first time with a best discus throw of 60.24 competing for GB U20s in a high-class field.
