Wales Women Held By Poles And Miss Out On EuroHockey Semi-Finals

Wales have failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the women’s EuroHockey Championship II after being held to a 2-2 draw against Poland in Glasgow. Despite a late rally, which included a second equaliser from skipper Leah Wilkinson, Wales could not find the winner which they needed to take them through. It means Wilkinson and her team must settle for fifth to eighth placing matches in the tournament which is the second level of the three European field hockey championships organised by the European Hockey Federation.

The Backstedt Sisters . . . Keeping The Family Business On The Road To Success

The Backstedt sisters – Elynor and Zoe – were born to cycle. Easy for them, they just have to get on their bikes. Not so easy for their parents, Magnus and Megan, as they try to cope with the practical difficulties of helping the careers of two of Welsh cycling’s most promising youngsters. Owen Morgan found out how they do it.  Parents the length and breadth of Wales will understand the challenges of delivering sporting offspring to various training sessions and competitions on time. Number one child may need to be dropped off at gymnastics at 6pm, while number two child has to be at football a few miles up the road at exactly the same time.

Evans To Miss Another WRC Round As Recovery Continues

Elfyn Evans will miss the next round of the FIA World Rally Championship, Rally Germany, as he continues to recover from an injury sustained on a non-championship event. The 30-year old M-Sport driver suffered a back injury following a heavy and awkward high-speed landing on the recent Rally Estonia. The injury forced him out of last weekend’s Rally Finland, and it will also put him out of the next round of the series as well, which takes place in Germany in a few weeks time.

Wales v England Always Matters . . . Especially If You’re The No.1 Team In The World

The dress rehearsals ahead of the World Cup are primed and Robin Davey says a Wales squad with 14 wins behind them should want to keep the habit – even if it means some chopping and changing. It’s World Cup warm-up time and though the matches may be friendlies before the real thing gets under way next month, don’t tell that to the Wales or England camps. The outcome in Japan this autumn is what really counts, of course, but there is no such thing as a friendly when Wales and England get to grips with one another.

Harry Wilson has revealed he was inclined to join Bournemouth because of their reputation for attractive football. The Wales winger has moved from Liverpool on a season-long loan and will help fill the gap left by his Welsh teammate David Brooks, who is facing three months on the sidelines with the Cherries following an ankle operation.

New Swan Sam Surridge Hopes To Bring England Quality To Liberty Stadium

New Swansea City striker Sam Surridge is hoping some of the stardust he picked up from rubbing shoulders with Jermain Defoe and Callum Wilson can be sprinkled at the Liberty Stadium. Surridge, 21, has completed a loan move from Bournemouth, where he was able view the England international strike pair at close quarters. The sixth player to arrive at the club this summer, Surridge will compete with Borja Baston and Courtney Baker-Richardson for the central striker’s role vacated by Oli McBurnie.

Morris Recovers At Home After GT Race Drama

British GT Championship racer Seb Morris is at home recovering today following a frightening conclusion to the penultimate round of the season at Brands Hatch where the JRM driver had to be dragged from his Bentley Continental after passing out behind the wheel. Ventilation issues, which meant the interior of the car filled with boiling-hot air throughout Morris’ stint in the second half of the two-hour race on Sunday, worryingly caused the Wrexham-born racer to begin to lose consciousness. With no relent from the Saharan-like air which billowed inside the No.31 car, a result of engine overheating from damage caused during an accident in the opening hour for team-mate Rick Parfitt Jnr, Morris still somehow managed to take the Bentley GT3 to an unthinkable ninth place and he also achieved the fastest average stint time.

England Are Looking Beyond Wales – And Sunday – Says Jamie George

England are unlikely to bother with much homework on Wales before the two nations clash in Cardiff this weekend. That’s the view of England hooker Jamie George, who claims the attention of the red rose brigade will be too focussed on the World Cup itself, rather than Sunday’s Grand Slam-winning opponents at Twickenham on Sunday. “We have not looked too much at Wales yet,” said Saracens’ Lions front rower George.

Cardiff Blues Hope For Ospreys Effect With Hayley Parsons

Hayley Parsons has followed in the footsteps of Debra Williams in joining a Welsh regional rugby board as a non-executive director. Williams became the first woman to get involved at boardroom level with one of the four Welsh regions back in 2012 and came from a similar commercial background to Parsons, who has been announced as the latest recruit to the Cardiff Blues board. Williams, who was managing director of insurance company Confused.com, helped in a major financial turn-around at the Ospreys before standing down early in 2015. The Ospreys had posted an annual loss of £1.9m in 2012, but had reduced that to a mere £6,000 two years later.

Osian Jones Hammers Welsh Record Books Twice In 24 Hours

Less than 24 hours after extending his own Welsh hammer record for the second time this season, Osian Jones went and did it again with a massive throw on Sunday. The Liverpool Harrier, who broke his own record at the Welsh Athletics International in Cardiff last month, had improved it once again in Portugal on Saturday afternoon with a throw of 72.19m. But competing at the same event on Sunday, he obliterated the new mark with a monster effort of 73.85 as he finished second to Windsor Slough and Eton’s Taylor Campbell.
