Rising Welsh star Immanuel Feyi-Waboso could soon be heading back to Wales as Wasps move closer to following Worcester into administration. Feyi-Waboso left Cardiff Rugby at the end of last season to join Wasps, one of a succession of highly talented Welsh teenagers to have moved to England in recent years. But after just one senior appearance in the Premiership Cup, the highly-rated 19-year-old former Wales U18s wing may soon find himself a free agent and looking around for a new club.
Swansea City, Cardiff City and Newport County fans could be able to watch their teams perform live on their screens every Saturday afternoon within a couple of seasons. Lifting the Saturday 3pm blackout is one option the English Football League could consider in the sale of its next television and media rights. The league confirmed on Wednesday it had issued a Request For Proposal (RFP), inviting interested broadcasters and media companies to come forward and suggest new ways of presenting the league on television and streaming platforms from the 2024-25 season, when its current deal with Sky Sports expires.
By Rob Carbon Alan Flowers might be in charge of the top Welsh team to date this season in BUCS Super Rugby, but he knows his Cardiff University side will have their unbeaten start to the new campaign put to the ultimate test on Wednesday night. Both of last season’s finalists are in the Welsh capital for Round […]
By Owen Morgan Wales has once again proved it’s a major player when it comes to hosting global sporting events. Saundersfoot’s staging of the World Rowing Coastal Championships last weekend has drawn glowing praise from the sport’s president. In an exclusive interview with Dai Sport, World Rowing president Jean-Christophe Rolland paid tribute to the Pembrokeshire […]
By Paul Jones Gemma Grainger believes Wales will use the pain of their heart-breaking World Cup near miss to fuel a successful mission to reach the finals of the 2025 Euros. The head coach admitted Wales’ World Cup exit was “incredibly tough to take” after Switzerland’s last-gasp winner had prevented a penalty shoot-out in Zurich. […]
If you’re left wanting more after bingeing through Welcome to Wrexham, there is good news – another Wrexham documentary series will be hitting the screen very soon. S4C has a behind-the-scenes documentary series of its own which recounts the story of Wrexham’s stunning takeover by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, through the eyes of the fans and the people of Wrexham. In a new three-part series which starts on Wednesday 12 October, Wrecsam…Clwb Ni! (Our Club!) will look at the impact of the takeover on the club, the town and the community.
Finding themselves under stress back in the kitchen, Cardiff’s resilience and determination in serving up a win over the Scarlets last weekend pleased Dai Young – but the club’s director of rugby knows there are still plenty of issues front of house. A second victory of the season moved Cardiff up to 10th in the URC table and lifted some of the clouds that had gathered over the Arms Park after a stormy few days. But the allegations of poor behaviour levelled at some players might not have raised so many hackles among supporters had they come after relative success on the field.
By Paul Jones As Wales gear up for the biggest match in their history, it is possible to assess the impact they are making in a number of different ways. They have reached the play-offs for next year’s World Cup for the first time; they beat Bosnia & Herzegovenia in front of another record home […]
Newport County have “reluctantly” decided to sack manager James Rowberry. The club’s board made their announcement on Monday, claiming they were grateful for the 37-year-old’s “passion” and commitment” but stating they will now begin searching for a successor. Rowberry’s team lost at home to bottom club Rochdale last weekend – a result that left Newport 18th in League Two and just three points above the relegation zone.
This has been the year of women on the water throughout Wales, thanks to the success of the #ShePaddles campaign. It reached its high tide mark back in May, when 75 women – the vast majority of whom had never met each other – took part in a paddlesport festival at the Plas y Brenin National Outdoor Centre, in Snowdonia. “Plas y Brenin had never had 75 people on the water at once before, never mind 75 women,” says Lydia Wilford, development officer at Canoe Wales.
Sheyi Ojo believes Cardiff City are now proving they carry a variety of threats to opposition teams as they continue to climb the Championship table. Ojo came off the substitutes’ bench to score one of the Bluebirds’ three goals as they won 3-1 at Wigan to continue caretaker manager Mark Hudson’s impressive and unbeaten start in charge. Goals from Callum Robinson, Ojo and Ryan Wintle ensured Cardiff continued their recent resurgence, meaning Hudson’s side are now up to 10th in the Championship table and just three points off the play-offs.
Keira Bevan will continue to think of the green, green grass of home as she progresses with Wales at the Rugby World Cup. With one under their belts, thanks to her dramatic late penalty against Scotland, Bevan and her teammates are now turning their attention to their next Pool A game against hosts New Zealand on Sunday. If she gets some goal-kicking opportunities again then the scrum-half will once more imagine she is back home on the practice field.
Ollie Cooper is counting down the days to seeing his father Kevin again – and hopes to make it a bad day for his old man’s former club. Cooper scored Swansea City’s first goal in their 2-1 win at home to Sunderland at the weekend, a result which reinforced the Swans’ growing ascendancy as promotion candidates as well as the 22-year-old midfielder’s rapid personal progress as a vital cog in the white machine. It was a first league goal for the club and afterwards dad Kevin was soon on the phone from Malaysia to hear all about it.
Dwayne Peel has promised the weekend’s Welsh derby between his Scarlets side and Cardiff will be “edgy” with both teams desperate to avoid another defeat. The Scarlets head coach has made six changes to his starting XV as the west Walians go in search of their first win of the season. Peel’s side will be smarting after a disappointing defeat in Treviso last Saturday but have a Cardiff Rugby side who are looking to set the record straight standing in their way, and one disrupted by an ongoing investigation into player behaviour in a pub last Saturday night, following a match they had lost.
Andy Rinomhota is hoping his new-found form at Cardiff City could eventually lead to him fulfilling his international dreams. The 25-year-old Leeds-born midfielder has quickly become a key cog in the new look Bluebirds side since joining from Reading in the summer. Having helped to deliver four points from the first two games in charge by interim boss Mark Hudson, Rinomhota is now hoping to add three more at Wigan on Saturday.
By Paul Evans Steve Wood is the 2022 Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally champion, having secured the title on the final round of the series on the Isle of Man. The Aberystwyth driver continues an incredible record of title success by Welsh drivers who have dominated the UK’s premier sealed-surface rally series for over a […]
Joe Allen will not be risked by Swansea City simply to strengthen their chances of extending their hot winning streak to four matches. Swans head coach Russell Martin has insisted Wales midfielder Allen will not be rushed back after his recent absence through injury, which is good news for Wales ahead of next month’s World Cup. After picking up the maximum nine points with consecutive triumphs over Hull, West Brom and Watford, Martin is likely to give Allen another week to recover from his latest hamstring niggle rather than play him against Sunderland at home on Saturday.
Kayleigh Powell plans to get a big kick out of her Rugby World Cup debut – and one of those she will thank is Ospreys star Stephen Myler. Powell is set to be named at full-back in the Wales team that start their Pool A campaign against Scotland in Whangarei, New Zealand on Sunday. It will be the 23-year-old’s first experience of the tournament and an early opportunity to prove her new full-time professional status has yielded reward.
A year ago James Rowberry’s life took a dramatic turn when he was offered the chance to manage his home town team, Newport County. As a first step into management following a successful stint as a first team coach at Cardiff City it seemed the perfect move. When his side delivered him a 3-1 win at Bristol Rovers on 23 October, 2021, in his first game in the dug-out, everything looked rosy.
Jess Fishlock has told her Wales teammates to be fearless and carefree when they go to Switzerland next week for another step on the road towards their World Cup dream. Fishlock has realised one ambition – scoring a spectacular World Cup play-off winner for Wales against Bosnia and Herzegovina in front of a record Cardiff crowd for a Wales women’s international of 15,200. The 35-year-old midfielder’s extra-time volley gave Wales a 1-0 victory at the Cardiff City Stadium as the Dragons advanced to a European play-off final in Switzerland on Tuesday.
