Newport County have “reluctantly” decided to sack manager James Rowberry.

The club’s board made their announcement on Monday, claiming they were grateful for the 37-year-old’s “passion” and commitment” but stating they will now begin searching for a successor.

Rowberry’s team lost at home to bottom club Rochdale last weekend – a result that left Newport 18th in League Two and just three points above the relegation zone.

The former Cardiff City coach took charge a year ago and achieved an 11th place finish after a promising start to the season.

This campaign has seen a further slide with just three victories in 13 league fixtures.

In a statement, the club said: “Newport County AFC has today parted company with first team manager James Rowberry and assistant manager Carl Serrant.

James Rowberry . . . A Year Down The Road At Newport County And He’s Reached A Crossroads

“The board of directors has reluctantly taken the decision to relieve James and Carl of their duties.

“The board wishes to place on record its sincere thanks to James for his work, passion, and commitment since joining the club last October, and to Carl for his efforts since his appointment in February of this year.

“We wish them every success in their future careers, and they will always be welcome at Rodney Parade.

“The club will now begin the process of recruiting a new first team manager.

“In the meantime, sporting director Darren Kelly will take charge of the first team for Saturday’s match at Crawley Town, supported by first team staff.”

The Exiles’ defeat to Rochdale was Rowberry’s eighth loss in 13 matches and came on the back of the fading form at the end of last season.

Mike Flynn Brands Rodney Parade Pitch Bog Standard …But Doesn’t Blame It For Newport County’s Latest Defeat

Rowberry was considered a bright, progressive young coached when he was tempted to move from Cardiff last year to replace former County manager Mike Flynn.

His struggles have highlighted the minor miracles Flynn performed each year – in both league and cup competitions on a tiny budget.
