Connor Roberts has admitted both he and Swansea City have gone off the boil as the season approaches its climax. In an honest assessment, not couched in the usual bland clichés, the Wales defender has stated simply that his own individual form and that of his team has slipped in recent weeks. The Swans travel to managerless West Brom this evening, having lost four of their last six matches in the Championship – a sequence partially disguised by their run to the FA Cup quarter-finals and the excitement of a quarter-final tie at home to Manchester City this weekend.
Graham Potter has told his Swansea City players they must deliver more consistency if they are going to compete with the best teams in the Championship. The Swans lost 1-0 at leaders Norwich on Friday night – a result that keeps them seven points adrift of the play-offs – but both managers handed out most of their praise to the losers. In Daniel Farke’s case that may have been a tactical decision, designed in part to deflect from a sub-standard display from his title favourites who had to rely on a single, magnificent goal by Emiliano Buendia. But Potter’s verdict was tempered with a realisation that his young side must learn to maintain their performance levels from week to week, rather than worry the leaders one day and fade away against mid-table opponents the next.
Graham Potter is getting ready for the toughest footballing week of his life. The Swansea City boss is preparing to face Championships leaders Norwich City on Friday night and Premiership top dogs Manchester City in the FA Cup eight days later. Sandwiched in between is another Championship away day at promotion-chasing West Brom on Wednesday, leaving Potter with little chance to catch his breath.
Welsh Youth Cup semi-final Swansea City 1, Cardiff City 0 Oli Cooper, the teenage son of former Cardiff City, Wimbledon and Wolves player and coach Kevin, sent the Bluebirds crashing out of the FAW Youth Cup at Llanelli’s Stebonheath Park stadium. Cooper, aged 19, struck just before half-time in in fiercely contested semi-final, earning the Swans […]
The Swans and the Bluebirds clash in a Welsh Youth Cup semi-final at Llanelli’s Stebonheath Park stadium on Wednesday evening (March 6, 7.30pm). Swansea City are looking to win the trophy for a 10th successive season, having beaten Cardiff City on penalties in the final at Liberty Stadium last season. Swansea’s 18-year-old Dutch midfield player […]
Graham Potter knows Swansea City’s youngsters must improve at solving puzzles like Bolton – but he’s willing to let them learn. Whether all, or some, or even Potter himself is still around to continue the education next season remains to be seen. The Swans’ 2-0 victory at home to Bolton on Saturday was not without its frustrations as first Potter’s side struggled to break down a 10-man defensive set-up and then suffered the same thing with only nine.
Cardiff City’s under-18 team, leaders of their Professional Development League division, suffered a 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town in Suffolk. Captain Sam Bowen fired the young Bluebirds in front at Playford Road, but Ipswich hit back to win thanks to goals from Lounes Foudil and Zak Brown. It was an eventful day for 18-year-old Felixstowe-born […]
Crisis club Bolton Wanderers fancy their chances of an upset at Swansea City today with manager Phil Parkinson claiming the hosts are vulnerable to hard-working opponents. Bolton visit the Liberty Stadium against a backdrop of unpaid players’ wages, takeover uncertainly, a relegation dogfight and an FA charge relating to an on-pitch fracas at Leeds United. But in comparing the Swans to Leeds, Parkinson – whose team lost 2-1 at Elland Road last week – claimed there were grounds for believing his team can add to the Swans’ problems with Graham Potter’s side having won just once in their last five Championship matches.
Gylfi Sigurdsson enjoyed his Welsh home-coming but says Cardiff City can only survive in the Premier League if they sort out their form on their own patch. Sigurdsson returned to Wales with Everton on Tuesday night and scored two typically classy goals as the Bluebirds were humbled 3-0 in front of their own fans. It was the Icelander’s first trip back over the border since he left Swansea City in a £45m move 18 months ago – an acrimonious departure that saw him refuse to go on the club’s pre-season tour of the USA.
Cardiff City earned a second successive Professional Development Under-23 League win, beating Queens Park Rangers 3-0 at home. Sion Spence, Danny Williams and Dan Griffiths scored at the Cardiff International Sports Campus. The young Bluebirds had defeated Millwall 1-0 away in their previous fixture with Lloyd Humphries scoring the only goal. City bid for a […]
Sheffield Wednesday 3 Swansea City 1 Graham Potter branded his Swansea City side ‘soft’ as their chances of challenging for the play-offs suffered a major blow at Sheffield Wednesday. The Swans paid for some poor defending as the Owls hit them for three goals in the first-half. Adam Reach struck a double – the second after Declan John’s woeful attempted clearance – with Steven Fletcher netting with a spectacular overhead kick.
Brian Flynn has returned to Wrexham as assistant manager to Bryan Hughes to help their promotion push back into the Football League. After a 21-year playing career, making 100 league appearances for Wrexham, he became player/manager in 1989 before going on to manage the club for 12 years including the famous FA Cup victory over Arsenal. “I am delighted to return and support Bryan at a club that is very special to me,” said Flynn after joining the National League table-toppers.
