Rosie Eccles admitted she was “heartbroken” after losing her opening bout in the Boxing Road to Tokyo Olympic qualifying event at the Copper Box Arena on Sunday. Eccles lost a split points decision to Russian fourth seed Saadat Dalgatova and the Welsh welterweight told Boxing News: “I don’t know what to say to be honest with you, I’m absolutely heartbroken. “I knew what to do to combat her style, but one way or another, according to the judges, I didn’t do that.

Wales’ trio of world class amateur boxers are all safely on the first stage of their road to this year’s Tokyo Olympic. Recently crowned world champion Lauren Price, Rosie Eccles and Sammy Lee have all made the Great Britain team for the Tokyo Olympic qualifier at the Copper Box in London in five weeks’ time. It means Wales will have three fighters in the group of eight men and five women who will carry the fight for GB. They will be part of more than 350 boxers from over 40 countries who will compete for 77 places at Tokyo 2020 at the qualifiers from March 14-24.

Wales can boast two world class women boxers – world champion Lauren Price and Olympic hopeful Rosie Eccles, who both came through Pontypool Amateur Boxing Club. For Eccles, 2020 is all about positive thinking and moving on from last year, as she told Owen Morgan. Rosie Eccles isn’t someone who dwells on past disappointments. In August, a contentious decision denied her a place in the final of the European Boxing Championships and two months later a narrow loss to a top class opponent saw her exit the World Championships after her second bout.

Lauren Price will miss the EUBC Women’s European Boxing Championships in Madrid to focus on the World Championships. GB Boxing chiefs have decided not to consider the middleweight for selection given her recent busy schedule including winning European Games crown in Belarus.
