Welsh Sprint Coach Matt Elias To Leave A Year Out From Commonwealth Games

Welsh Athletics has launched a search to replace former Olympian Matt Elias who has announced he is leaving his post in charge of developing the nation’s sprinting talent. A statement by the sport’s governing body said Elias, who won a clutch of medals for Wales and Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games and European Athletics Championships, is leaving his post to “pursue other opportunities within the sport”. Although Elias will continue to support Wales’ sprints programme for the rest of the summer, Welsh Athletics has immediately launched a recruitment process for a new national talent development coordinator for sprints, hurdles and relays.

All Change For Glamorgan In 50-Over Cricket

By Paul Jones Kiran Carlson and David Harrison will both step up for Glamorgan’s Royal London Cup campaign as Carlson is appointed captain and Harrison named as head coach. With club captain Chris Cooke and vice-captain David Lloyd both drafted in The Hundred, 23-year-old Carlson will lead the team in the 50-over competition, while Harrison will take over the reins from Matt Maynard when he joins Welsh Fire’s coaching set up. Director of cricket, Mark Wallace believes both will gain valuable experience from this opportunity.

Emily James And Mia Bernardo Earn GB Call For Aerobic European Championships

Aberdare duo Emily James and Mia Bernardo have been selected to represent Great Britain at this year’s Aerobic European Championships in Italy in September. In their first year in the senior ranks, 17-year-old James – who trains between Bulmershe GC in Reading and Phoenix DGC in Aberdare – and Bernardo, 18, from Phoenix, will become the first Welsh aerobic gymnasts to go to a European Championships since former senior women’s British champion Kayleigh Silver eight years ago. The pair have been selected as part of a five-strong senior group alongside double senior British individual champion Niamh Keane (Bulmershe) and Basingstoke Gymnastics Club duo Keleigh-Anne Blakey and Elizabeth Marais.
