Wales’ leading male gymnast, Brinn Bevan, missed out on Olympic selection this year due to injury. But the 2016 Olympian is refusing to be feel downcast and has instead set himself a new ambition – to wear the red vest of Wales at the Commonwealth Games for the first time, as he tells Tom Prosser. Welsh Gymnastics star Brinn Bevan says he can’t wait to get the dragon on his chest as he aims to honour his late father’s side of the family by representing Wales at next year’s Commonwealth Games. Bevan previously competed at the 2016 Olympic Games and has also medalled at the World Championships – winning silver in the team event in 2015.
Glamorgan’s season may be drifting towards a low key conclusion in the County Championship, but no-one appears to have told captain Chris Cooke. The skipper smashed an unbeaten 205 as Glamorgan spent day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship second division match against Surrey constructing a mammoth total of 672 for 6 declared. The home side responded with 45 for no wicket in the final hour but despite a very flat wicket Cooke hopes the first double-hundred of 35-year-old Cooke’s 12-year first-class career can still set up a victory for his team in their final game of the campaign.

Emily Thomas says she is looking forward to new opportunities after deciding to retire from top level gymnastics following a series of knee injuries Thomas, 20, and Wales’ leading artistic gymnast of recent years, has chosen to stop competing – dealing a blow to Wales’ hopes of medals at next year’s Commonwealth Games. The former Great Britain squad member and all-round Welsh champion suffered a knee injury in 2019 and although she battled back to fitness, a ruptured ligament in June of this year led her eventually to decide to retire.

Brinn Bevan marked his return to the competition floor in style as he was crowned British champion on parallel bars – and now wants to take on the world again. The 24-year-old, from South Essex Gymnastics Club, was competing at the 2021 Men’s British Championships in Cardiff.

Three time gold medalist Aled Davies, Taekwondo silver medalist Lauren Williams and Joshua Bugajski who won bronze in the rowing were all in attendance. Rio 2016 Olympian Brinn Bevan (South Essex) headlines the Welsh contingent looking to make their mark on this year’s championships, which are being staged at the Sport Wales National Centre at Sophia Gardens over Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September. It also doubles up as a trial event for October’s World Artistic Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan.
Aberdare duo Mia Bernardo and Emily James gave a glimpse of what they might achieve on a European stage when they struck gold at the Aerobic British Championships in Guildford. The talented Welsh pair, back competing across what were two action-packed days at Surrey Sports Park last weekend, were part of a five-strong group in the senior group competition, winning with a score of 18.894. Along with Bernardo (Phoenix Dance & Gymnastics) and James (Bulmershe/Phoenix), the wining group also included Niamh Keane (Bulmershe) and Basingstoke pair Keleigh-Anne Blakey and Elizabeth Marais.
