Not many 16-year-old Welsh athletes have an eye on competing at next year’s Olympic Games – but then not many have had the kind of meteoric rise of Ruby Evans. Jonny Clayton secured his second Interwetten Austrian Darts Open championship and his first PDC ranking title since October 2021, beating Josh Rock 8-6 in a high-quality and dramatic match in Graz. Welsh star Clayton defeated Jelle Klaasen, Damon Heta, Joe Cullen, and Daryl Gurney to reach the final, where he faced Rock.

Glamorgan coach Matthew Maynard has told his players they need to rapidly improve after the weather helped them escape with a draw in their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Durham in Cardiff. Glamorgan secured a draw despite being forced to follow on with Kiran Carlson’s hundred the highlight for the home side. A century stand between Carlson and Timm van der Gugten brought Glamorgan close to the follow-on target but wickets shared amongst the Durham seamers were enough to bowl Glamorgan out for 305 and allow the visitors to ask them to bat again.

Joe Cordina paid tribute to his opponent and he regained the IBF super-featherweight title with a thrilling split decision win over Shavkat Rakhimov at the Cardiff International Arena. “He is a tough fighter but I felt no-one could beat me tonight,” Cordina said.

Wales’ Commonwealth Games gymnast Elizabeth Popova has been selected to represent Great Britain at the upcoming Portimão International Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament in Portugal. In what will be its 30th staging, the Portimão International takes place from April 30th to May 2nd.

Marnus Labuschagne has retained his spot in Australia’s initial squad for this summer’s Ashes series. The Glamorgan batsman will serve under Pat Cummins who will lead the 17-man squad with Steve Smith as his deputy, while opener Marcus Harris, all-rounder Mitch Marsh and Inglis are recalled and David Warner is also included.

Former Great Britain international Michael Horley has been appointed as the new national coach by Welsh Judo. The 35-year-old will start this summer after moving from Canada, where he worked as high performance coach for Judo Saskatchewan within their performance programme.

Mark Williams has no interest in tempting fate after cruising into the second round of the World Snooker Championship with a 10-5 win over Jimmy Robertson on Monday. The struggling Celtic Dragons have turned to Jill McIntosh, a former coach and captain of the Australian national netball team, to try and provide a lift.
