Sailing in North and South Wales is gearing up to celebrate the Rio finals day on Wednesday August 17 – the first time in the modern era Wales has had two sailors in the Olympics. Both Cardiff Bay in the capital, where Hannah Mills enjoyed the formative years of her sport, and Bala in the North, where Chris Grube learned to sail, are offering the opportunities to get out in a boat and give sailing a try before settling down to watch the finals on TV. Sailing in North and South Wales is gearing up to celebrate the Rio finals day on Wednesday August 17 – the first time in the modern era Wales has had two sailors in the Olympics.

Both Cardiff Bay in the capital, where Hannah Mills enjoyed the formative years of her sport, and Bala in the North, where Chris Grube learned to sail, are offering the opportunities to get out in a boat and give sailing a try before settling down to watch the finals on TV.

Gymnastics gold medallist Frankie Jones will be among those trying the sport for the first time in Cardiff Bay, as the Sail for Gold Roadshow sweeps into the Welsh capital. Olympic silver medallist Stuart Bithell will be on hand, along with up and coming Welsh sailor Michael Beckett and a host of other international class sailors Jess Lavery, Saskia Sills, Noelle Finch, Martin Wrigley and Tom Phipps.

They will be helping with the taster sessions with their ‘sailing master classes’ then later will be helping with the commentary during the medal races.

2012 silver medallist Hannah Mills could be going for gold in the 470 class, along with partner Saskia Clark, while Grube and partner Luke Patience are also set to be in action.

In Bala sailing club, where Grube learned to sail, there will also be opportunities to try sailing for free and then watch the finals from Rio.

RYA Cymru Wales development officer Hester Walker will be on hand, along with RYA Cymru Wales Community Coach Ed Curtis.
