Wales Open Five Nations Squash Championships In Style

Wales started their Five Nations Squash Championships campaign in style, earning wins at under-13 and under-15 levels.

Alyx Kelleher helped Wales in their clash with Scotland, beating Jemma Young in a hard fought match at Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff.

The first game ended in a remarkable 23-21 success for Alyx, but Jemma fought back to take the next two games 11-6, 11-2.

Alex kept working during an outstanding match and came out on top 3-2, winning the fourth and fifth games 11-6, 11-1.

Dan Lewis, Josh Davies, Lewys Audsley and Emma James were also Welsh winners for the under-13 team.

At under-15 level, Wales won 3-2 against Scotland. Ryan Lewis, Tate Harms and Rhys Evans won their matches, while Bronte Wright and Lucy Jones completed the Welsh team.

The championships continue today and tomorrow with teams from England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Wales competing in the two age groups.

Under-13 coach Greg Tippings has a seven-strong team of boys and girls and they are Dan Lewis, Josh Davies, Lewys Audsley, Nero Harms, Alyx Kelleher, Olivia Stephens and Emma Jameson.

The under-13 won against Scotland and face tough assignments against France (11.30am) and England (3.30pm) on Saturday before wrapping up their tournament against Ireland on the Sunday at 11.30am.

Wales under-15 coach Nic Birt’s squad is Ryan Lewis, Tate Harms, Rhys Evans, Joshua Audsley, Bronte Wright, Lucy Jones and Georgia Lincoln.

They have already played Scotland and England, while they take on France (1.30pm) and Ireland (5.30pm) on Saturday.

Senior Welsh player Emyr Evans caused a stir in the Amsterdam Open event, beating number one seed Edmon Lobez (Spain).

The match lasted 89 minutes and Evans won 11-5, 7-22, 6-22, 22-6, 11-8. He now plays Roee Avraham (Israel) in the quarter-finals.
