- Wales Enjoy A Golden Marvellous Monday At The Games
It’s been a mavellous Monday for Wales at the Commonwealth Games with three gold medals, two silvers and one bronze.
The incredible six medal haul has moved Wales up to eighth in the medal table on Australia’s Gold Coast with six gold, six silver and four bronze to give a 16-medal total.
The six gold medals already exceed the five golds Wales won at the 2018 Games in Glasgow – with only five days of competition gone and six still remaining.
The gold medals began with bowls pair Marc Wyatt and Daniel Salmon winning their final against Scotland.
That was followed by para-athlete Hollie Arnold in the F46 javelin and then a shock gold for swimmer Alys Thomas in the 200m butterfly.
The silvers came from gymnast Latalia Bevan on the floor exercise, as well as shooter Ben Llewellin, with squash star Tesni Evans underlining her rapid progress up the world ladder by taking bronze.
Wales managed to win a total of 36 medals four years ago to finish 12th in the table.
With six days of competition still to go, that total could be neared and the record of 25 medals from a Games outside of the UK – set in Auckland in 1990 – looks likely to fall.
