Matthew Maynard Turns From Winter Caretaker To Summer’s Leading Light

Matthew Maynard will have a second innings as Glamorgan coach after being appointed for the whole of the 2019 season.

The former England batsman was announced as interim head coach for the winter following Robert Croft’s departure in October.

But now that temporary role has grown into a season-long job for the man who coached the county between 2008 and 2010, before three seasons spent in charge at Somerset.

Glamorgan plan to look again at their recruitment of a permanent head coach at the end of the season – although Maynard could well be a candidate.

“I’m delighted to lead the squad into what we aspire will be a successful season,” said Maynard.

“We know as a group we need to improve on our performances from last year. The way the lads have gone about their work so far this winter has been very pleasing.”

Maynard rejoined Glamorgan as batting consultant last year and new director of cricket Mark Wallace believes his former boss is the ideal man for the job.

“It’s great news for the club Matt has agreed to carry on as interim head coach until the end of the season,” said the former wicket-keeper.

“He is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable coaches on the circuit and knows the club inside out.

“Matt has had a big impact running our winter programme and we look forward to him continuing that into the summer.”
