Matt’s Back: Matthew Maynard Returns To Glamorgan

Matthew Maynard is back at Glamorgan.

The county’s former captain and director of cricket has been appointed as a consultant batting coach.

Maynard, 51, was in charge at Somerset last season, but stood down from the job at the end of the campaign after three years at the helm.

Back at Glamorgan, where he spent 20 years as a player, Maynard will work under head coach and his former teammate Robert Croft, spending time with both the first team and academy players.

“Matt has a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach which will be invaluable to the club,” said Glamorgan chief executive Hugh Morris.

“He has a genuine passion and enthusiasm for batting and with his history at Glamorgan is the ideal person to bring on board to oversee and develop the first-team batting, as well as our young Welsh talent.

“He will support the current coaching team under the leadership of Robert Croft and bring extra technical expertise to the batting as we look to build on our one-day success and begin to compete across all three formats.”

Maynard, said: “I’m delighted to be back at the club I was able to call home for so long.

“We have a very exciting group of batters at Glamorgan and I am relishing the opportunity to work with them.

“Hopefully I can pass on some of the knowledge I have absorbed over a long career and help them take their games to the next level.”

Maynard enjoyed an illustrious 20 year playing career with Glamorgan, first bursting onto the county scene at Swansea in 1985 when he struck a century on his first-class debut.

He captained Glamorgan to the 1997 County Championship title and by the time of his retirement in 2005 had amassed over 24,000 first-class runs and scored a club leading 54 centuries.

His talents with the bat were also recognised by England selectors, with Maynard appearing in four Test Matches and 14 One-Day Internationals during the course of his career.

He went on to coach Glamorgan and was assistant coach with England during their 2005 Ashes victory.

He later became head coach of the South African team, Nashua Titans, where he won the domestic four-day competition as well as the domestic T20 competition in his first season.

In 2014, Maynard was appointed director of cricket at Somerset and almost led them to their first County Championship crown in 2016, before they were pipped to the title on the final day of the season by Middlesex.
