Lewis Oliva Rides To A Career High As He Takes Silver In Canada

Lewis Oliva became the latest Welsh cyclist to pick up a medal at the World Cup track cycling as he produced the best result of his career to win silver in the keirin in Canada.

Already this winter Jon Mould, Elinor Barker and Manon Lloyd have enjoyed medal success on the boards and Oliva, studying to become a doctor at Cardiff University, joined them with the race of his life.

The 2014 Welsh Commonwealth Games representative had earlier won the British keirin title this year.

His British team mate Joe Truman had to go through the repechages to qualify for the second round of the keirin, having finished third in his first heat, but Oliva comfortably qualified at the first attempt. Truman bounced back, winning his repechage heat to reach the next stage.

That was a round too far for him, finishing sixth in his heat, but the 25-year-old Oliva was able to progress and he produced a stunning finish to take second place and win silver behind Dutch rider Harrie Lavreysen.
