Jamie Donaldson And Amy Boulden Carry Welsh Flag Back Into Tournament Golf

Welsh stars Jamie Donaldson and Amy Boulden are back playing tournament golf and are already showing impressive form.

Donaldson shot a three-under-par 67 to finish in a tie for third at the 2020protour event at Oulton Hall in Leeds on Monday.

The 2020protour is in its first year and sells itself on the basis of being a gender-equal tour, where men and women compete together for the same prize money.

The only difference is that women use forward tee positions.

Boulden finished as the top female golfer – finishing with a one-under-par 69, just four shy of the eventual winner Marcus Armitage.

Armitage fired a five-under-par round of 65 to win by one stroke from Alex Belt with former Ryder Cup hero Donaldson back in third.

The tournament was the second 2020protour event Donaldson has played in as he awaits the resumption of the European Tour.

A week earlier he had posted a 75 in the third 2020protour event of the season – and first after lockdown – at Cleckheaton.

Boulden was playing in her second event as she prepares for the Rose Ladies Series – sponsored by Justin Rose – which starts on Thursday at Brokenhurst Manor in Hampshire.

The 2020protour events and the Rose Ladies Series are both closed to spectators and caddies and social distancing protocols are being adhered to.

Golf’s European Tour will resume on July 22 with a run of six tournaments over six weeks in the UK, starting with the British Masters.

The calendar has been wiped out since March due to the coronavirus pandemic but golf will return at Close House in northeast England.

The season will run until December, with all tournaments played behind closed doors and subject to strict safety and testing protocols.

The other events in the British swing are the English Open, the English Championship, back-to-back tournaments at Celtic Manor — the Celtic Classic and the Wales Open — and the UK Championship at the Belfry.

However, they are all subject to the lifting of the two-week quarantine by the government relating to those travelling from outside the country.
