- James Tomlinson Leads Wales Youngsters In Swansea Showdown
Some of Wales’ most promising athletics talent will be competing against the best young stars from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland at an international match in Swansea on Wednesday night.
Wales Under-20s and Wales Schools will take on three England regional U-20 teams along with Scotland U-20s at Swansea University Athletics Stadium.
Among those selected for the Wales Under-20s is James Tomlinson, who recently represented Great Britain in the discus at the World Junior Championships in Finland.
In last year’s Under-20s international Tomlinson won the male athlete of the match award as Wales triumphed over their English and schools opponents.
Shortly afterwards, the Pembrokeshire Harrier won a silver medal for Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, last summer.
Another Welsh athlete who won silver at those games was Sarah Omoregie, who will once again be wearing the red vest when she competes in the shot put on Wednesday night.
Bethan Rees, who last Friday won the English Schools javelin title in Birmingham, before winning the senior Welsh title in the evening in Cardiff, is another one of Wales’ talented young throwers included in the U-20s team.
Welsh Athletics performance logistics manager, Emma Wiltshire, said of the Wales U-20 team: “We have a fantastic mixture within the team of those competing for Wales for their first time, and those more experienced athletes where this will be their last opportunity to compete for Wales at U20 level.
“We’re pleased to have so many athletes accept their automatic selection onto the team after winning their event at the Welsh Junior Championships back in June, and look forward to seeing how these athletes perform against teams from the other home nations.”
The final result of last year’s international was: Wales – 132 points; England South – 125; England Midlands – 97; England North- 95; Welsh schools – 61.
This Wednesday’s action starts in the field at 4.30pm with the women’s hammer, while the track schedule starts at 6.45pm with the women’s 4x100m relay.
