Geraint Thomas Takes Criterium Du Dauphine Lead After Thrilling Duel With Dan Martin

Geraint Thomas took the overall lead at the Criterium Du Dauphine after Ireland’s Dan Martin won stage five.

Thomas finished just four seconds behind Martin, but it was the Welshman who took the yellow jersey for Team Sky in France to further underline his current strong form.

Martin finished the stage with a time of three hours, 21 minutes and 19 seconds. He fought off a spirited fight from the Cardiff rider in the final kilometre after a thrilling summit duel.

“These four days in the mountains are the hardest four days I would have raced I think in a one-week stage race,” said 32-year-old Thomas.

“It’s a super hard climbing stage race, even harder on the weekend now. I’ll enjoy tomorrow, or I’ll try to enjoy it in the jersey and defend it but it’s super hard.”

Team Sky top the team standings for a third straight day with a combined time of 50 hours, 39 minutes and 47 seconds.

They are followed by AG2R La Mondiale who are eight minutes and 56 seconds behind.

The 110-kilometre sixth stage on Saturday will take place between Frontenex and La Rosiere Espace San Bernardo.

Team Sky leader in the absence of Chris Froome, Thomas finished four seconds back from Martin on the 130km fifth stage to seize the overall race lead by 1min 09sec from Italian Damiano Caruso with just two stages remaining, both of them summit finishes.

Thomas’s Italian Sky team-mate Gianni Moscon is thrid overall on the same time as Caruso.

Thomas, winner of Paris-Nice in 2016, is coming into form at just the right time with the Tour de France a month away.

England’s Adam Yates, who’s twin Simon wore the pink jersey at the Giro d’Italia for 13 stages in May, was third on the day at 15 seconds.

In the final steep climb Martin, trailing the overall leaders by almost three minutes, was allowed to escape as the overall contenders eyed each-other.

Thomas then launched a spectacular bid to catch Martin and only French hope Romain Bardet was able to follow.

But the Frenchman ran out of gas as Thomas quickly narrowed the gap on Martin, who stood up out of the saddle in a final show of defiance.

“Ive been feeling good all year,” the Irishman said after the race.

“And the pack let me go because I’m a bit back in the standings.

“I’m in better condition than I expected,” he added, before playing down the significance of his 16-month win drought.

“I’m more worried about my form for the Tour de France.

“It’s been a learning process starting in a new team so getting this win for UAE is great,” he said.

Saturday’s stage is almost the same as the Tour de France stage 16 with four major climbs on the menu and a summit finish at la Rosiere.
