2018 winner Geraint Thomas will compete in the Tour de France for the final time this summer, it has been confirmed.

Former champion Geraint Thomas will compete in the Tour de France for the 14th and final time this summer.

The Welshman, 39, won the 2018 edition of the prestigious event with Team Sky and is set to bring an end to his glittering career later this year.

But it has been confirmed he is part of INEOS Grenadiers’ eight-rider squad for the 112th edition of the Tour de France this year.

“I’m really looking forward to my final Tour de France. It’ll be my 14th, which sounds mad, I never thought that when I first lined up for it back in 2007, I’d still be going," said Thomas.

"I’ve certainly had my ups and downs but it’s an amazing race; the biggest and best in the world, and my favourite.

“It’s never straightforward and always super-hard, but this year my approach will be as it always is - to give everything out on the road for the team to be as successful as possible. We’ll all have important roles to play and I will definitely be playing mine.

“I just can’t wait to get to Lille and into the spirit of what’s always a rollercoaster of an event. A three-week all-inclusive bike holiday around France, what’s not to like?!”

Following a crash in the Tour de Suisse, Thomas has made a full recovery to feature in the 2025 Tour de France.

It comes after the two-time Olympic gold medallist and three-time World Championship winner announced plans to retire at the end of the current season.

Prior to his team's official announcement ahead of the Tour de France, Thomas teased fans with an image on social media to suggest he would compete this summer.

Accompanied by a picture of his wife, Sara, preparing to cut his hair, Thomas wrote: "The final pre-Tour chop."

The 2025 Tour de France begins in Lille on Saturday, July 5.
