- Double Welsh Gold For Emma Finucane And Anna Morris
Finucane provided the defining moment of day three at the 2026 UEC Track Elite European Championships as the Carmarthenshire rider led a golden double for Great Britain alongside fellow Welsh athlete Morris.
Finucane, 23, underlined her status as one of the dominant forces in world sprinting by claiming gold in the women’s sprint final in Konya, adding to the momentum she had already built earlier in the championships.

Her victory came just 24 hours after she set a new world record in the women’s flying 200m time-trial, arriving at the third day of competition in imperious form.
Facing team-mate Sophie Capewell in the final, Finucane delivered two controlled and explosive rides to settle the contest in straight races.
Her winning time of 10.608 seconds was 0.045 seconds quicker than Capewell’s, sealing her second gold medal of the championships and seeing her reclaim a European title she last held in 2024.
After stepping off the track, Finucane reflected on the whirlwind nature of the previous 48 hours and the satisfaction of converting record-breaking speed into championship success.
“Yesterday I wanted to execute my ride perfectly, and I did; I came away with a world record and I couldn't believe it,” she said.
“But it doesn't finish there, you still have to race races and the girls were really fast, there was lots of fast sprinting and to come away with this medal and with this jersey means so so much to me.”

Finucane’s triumph also highlighted the continued depth of British women’s sprinting.
While Finucane was providing fireworks on the sprint track, her Welsh compatriot Anna Morris was producing a masterclass of control and consistency in the women’s omnium.
The Olympic bronze medallist dominated across the disciplines before closing out victory in the final points race, finishing 13 points clear of Norway’s Anita Stenberg to secure her third European Championship gold medal.
Morris described a demanding day of racing and the satisfaction of executing her tactics under pressure.
“The racing was really tough today, Stenberg and Bossuyt made the race really hard and the points race was difficult to navigate but I worked hard to steal the points and win the race there at the end,” she said.
“The European jersey is really special, especially in an event like the omnium, so I’m really happy and proud to be taking this back home.”
Together, Finucane and Morris ensured Wales played a central role in Great Britain’s medal haul in Konya.
Their gold medals helped take Team GB’s tally at the championships to seven medals overall, including four golds, underlining a strong start to the European campaign.
Capewell’s silver marked her first individual European medal since 2023, following an 18-month break after the Olympic cycle.
The all-British final was further evidence of the system that delivered team sprint gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, having not even qualified a women’s team since London 2012.
Elsewhere on day three, Matt Bostock narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in the men’s individual pursuit. Tim Shoreman placed 10th in the same event, while Will Tidball finished 18th in the men’s scratch race.
