Jamie Donaldson finished tied for 21st place at the US Masters – seven places adrift of his best finish at the tournament two years ago.

The Welshman ended his week at Augusta on five over par after firing a final round par 72 to leave him 10 strokes short of eventual winner Danny Willett.

It was the same even par score Donaldson had posted in his second round and it left him with his second best finish at the championship and earning a cheque for US $120,000.

It might have been better for Donaldson who got his final round off to a flier with successive birdies at the opening two holes.

But he wiped out that start with a double bogey at the fifth, before more bogeys at the next two holes to drop four shots in just three holes.

Donaldson then recovered before hitting two more birdies in his round at holes eight and 13.

While Donaldson may not have threatened the lead on the final afternoon, champion Willett owes something to Wales for his progression to the top.

The 29-year-old Englishman, from Sheffield, revealed he learnt much about golf by playing in a Welsh sheep field.

He said:  “We used to go to Anglesey in Wales for two weeks in the summer and play the same nine-hole golf course three or four times.

“I think the longest club you hit was probably a seven iron on this par three course in the middle of a sheep field.

“You skip it forward 17 years and you’ve got an invite to the Masters. It’s just a bit crazy really.”
