Donald Won’t Duck The Fight For Glamorgan

Aneurin Donald believes Glamorgan could yet mount an escape against Leicestershire even though an opening Specsavers County Championship Division Two defeat appears likely.

Glamorgan lead by only 93 runs with just two wickets remaining after day three belonged to the visitors at the Swalec Stadium.

Donald top scored with 57 off 87 balls before Ben Raine, Charlie Shreck and Clint McKay starred for the visitors to reduce Glamorgan to 133 for 8.

But an unbeaten stand of 39 between Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan – both 19 not out – in the late Tuesday evening sunshine offered Glamorgan hope, and Donald said a lead of 150 or more could bring the home side back into contention.

He said: “Every run over 100 now brings us into the game. Wagg and Hogan can be dangerous so we’ve got to scrape together a lead and see what happens.”

Donald added 60 for the fourth wicket with Jacques Rudolph before the Glamorgan captain edged behind to Niall O’Brien off Charlie Shreck.

And Shreck, the experienced Leicestershire seamer, accounted for Donald a few overs later in the same way. But the Welsh youngster remained upbeat about Glamorgan’s chances at the end of the day.

Donald added: “It was a disappointing batting performance. They bowled really well again, but we showed a lot of fight at the end with Waggy and Hoges at the end and if we get of lead of 120-150 or more then we’re in the game.”

The morning session saw Leicestershire finish on 427 all out, with an initial lead of 79 in the first innings.

Donald added: “Obviously it was a tough day for us. I thought we actually bowled pretty well in the morning, we beat the bat a couple of times, but chances didn’t quite go to hand.”
