Andrew Selby Takes Five Minutes To Restore His Career After A Year Out

Andrew Selby may have been out of boxing for a year, but he wasted little time in prolonging his comeback on Saturday night.

The Barry flyweight, who still hopes to emulate big brother Lee and fight for a world title, stopped Adam Yahaya inside two rounds at the Newport Centre.

It means the next stage to his world title shot – an eliminator against Mexican Julio César Martinez – is now in his sights for December before he can look to challenge WBC champion Cristofer Rosales in the new year.

“I wasn’t taking any chances so I took him out,” Selby told BBC Sport.

“I wanted more rounds ideally, but he has never been stopped, so that is a bonus.

“I have been ordered to fight a final eliminator and then it will be Rosales, who I have already beaten.

“I didn’t want to perform badly. I wanted to see if I still had it. I thought it was a good performance, but I will have to watch it back.”

Whilst Selby impressed, there was a shock defeat for Welsh prospect and Olympic silver medallist Fred Evans.

The Newport middleweight was stopped in two rounds by Ryan Tomms to end his unbeaten record.
