Abe Forsyth Proves Able Champion

The 14-year-old fired a second round 73 in the tough conditions to come through to take the title, even though he has another year in the age group.

Wrexham’s Matthew Sandoz won the Under 13’s Welsh Championship, also at Vale of Llangollen, with clubmate Daniel Rumsey in third, with Landudno’s Reuben Bather in second place.

“Full credit to the course at Llangollen and all the players for being able to get through 36 holes in a day to complete the Under 15’s championship,” said Golf Union of Wales championships manager David Wilson.

“It was a commendable effort all round, but of course particular congratulation go to Abe whose score of 73 in the afternoon conditions really was a very good score out there.”

Forsyth is a member of three clubs, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Tenby, where he is coached by Rhys Harry. His biggest previous win was the South Wales Under 15’s.

“This is the biggest win I have had, so I am really chuffed,” said Forsyth. “It was just a question of trying to keep it straight rather than going for distance because there was a lot of wind and rain.

“I knew I was four shots off the lead after the first round so I had to have a solid second round. I have another year in this age group so hopefully I can defend the title next year.”

Forsyth finished seven over, with Tom Peet of Pyle and Kenfig two strokes back.
