“Bomber” Sean, 13, Strikes Target With Net 59 For Pyle And Kenfig

A sensational net 59 by 13-year-old Sean David helped Pyle and Kenfig claim the Welsh Junior Club Championship at Builth Wells.

A net 70, after starting with ten straight pars, was the highlight of the team effort, with brother and sister Brodi and Emilie Lewis also finishing in the top ten.

Spencer Harvard-Pratt was second for host club Builth Wells, while Jack Wiggins was in third to help The Vale Resort into second place overall.

“The average age of the team was thirteen and a half so we were going there for experience really, but they had put a lot of work in before the event and played really well,” said Pyle and Kenfig secretary/manager Simon Hopkin.

“Everyone played their part, but Sean getting a gross 70, net 59 at the age of 13 was fantastic. We nickname him Bomber because he hits it so far and he hit a 306 yard drive at the last which was just colossal.

“We won the West Glamorgan title, which was great, but then we lost Welsh squad player Tom Peet after a rugby accident, but 13-year-old Kieran Tantum came in and did well.

“There were plenty of people from the club to support the team, but we exceeded our expectations.

“It shows the development in the junior section at Pyle and Kenfig. We have first team squad and academy, we will have a nine hole course for the juniors opening next year, we were also the first golf club in Wales to get the Junior Golf Cert award and we are one of the Golf Union of Wales girls hubs.”

The Pyle and Kenfig team was David, 14-year-old Emilie Lewis with a handicap of seven, 10-year-old Brodi Lewis off 18, 12-year-old Sam Peet off 11, and Tantum off 20.

Pyle and Kenfig club captain Roger Parsons said, “It was very exciting and quite emotional, the first time we have won the Welsh Junior Championships, to see the juniors participating – never mind winning – meant we were elated.

“The junior section is going forward massively, we have addressed the situation in the last 12 months because we could see we were struggling, so we formulated a plan which is coming together.”

Golf Union of Wales championships manager David Wilson said, “Congratulations to Pyle and Kenfig for their tremendous win, it is not very often we see a 59 on the scoreboard in any of our championships.

“Also thanks to Builth Wells who did a tremendous job staging the event and the course was in fantastic condition, encouraging some good play from all the competitors.”
