Newport County showed no FA Cup hangover after their win over Leeds as they beat Grimsby 2-1 on their return to Sky Bet League Two action. Robbie Willmott’s first-half strike and Frank Nouble’s deflected effort moved County to within two points off the play-offs, while Jamille Matt gave Grimsby some hope late on before being sent off. New signing Josh Sheehan was an unused substitute but believes he has two more games to prove he is worth a place against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup.
Newport County manager Mike Flynn has earned the FA Cup reward he was hoping for with a glamour clash at home to Tottenham in the fourth round. Flynn had wished to be paired with Liverpool, his boyhood club, after his League Two side stunned Leeds United on Sunday with a 2-1 victory.
Shawn McCoulsky wants Manchester United or Chelsea, while manager Mike Flynn hopes to be paired with Liverpool – but both Newport County heroes will be happy with any money-spinning, glory-hunting tie when the FA Cup fourth round draw is made on Monday night. Winning goalscorer McCoulsky and manager Flynn will join the rest of the Newport squad in waiting eagerly to see which opponent comes out of the hat following County’s memorable 2-1 victory over Leeds United at Rodney Parade on Sunday. It was the kind of FA Cup tie that reminds fans why they go to grounds on freezing afternoons in extra layers of thermal underwear instead of watching on TV.
Shawn McCoulsky celebrated his 21st birthday with a magnificent FA Cup winner for Newport County against former trophy winners Leeds United. Almost 8,000 fans were at Rodney Parade and McCoulsky jumped above Leeds defenders to power in a headed winner. “What a brilliant feeling,” McCoulsky told BBC Sport. “The gaffer told me to go on […]
Mike Flynn still believes in the romance of the FA Cup, but love has never paid the bills in football. The Newport County manager will try and chase the dream but have an eye on reality when his team host Leeds United in Sunday’s third round tie – a game that could lead to the club chalking up £250,000 from their run in the competition so far.
Michael Flynn has belief in his Newport County players and insists Championship club Leeds United are in for a rough ride at Rodney Parade on Sunday (Noon). The clubs clash in an FA Cup third round tie being broadcast live on BBC television and the match is virtually an 8,000 sell-out. “We’re quietly confident,” said […]
Newport County are close to a sell-out attendance of 8,000 for their Emirates FA Cup clash with Championship club Leeds United on Sunday. More than 6,500 tickets have already been sold and sales will end at 7pm on Friday. The third round tie on Sunday (Noon kick-off) is all ticket and County goals ace Padraig […]
Robbie Willmott is intent on repeating a major Newport County memory. The winger from Essex, a former Cambridge United and Luton Town player, is back with the Exiles five years after helping the Welsh club return to the Football League. County defeated Wrexham in the 2013 play-off final at Wembley Stadium and were back in […]
Former Newport County and Merthyr Town player Scott Barrow is gunning for Wrexham in the Vanarama National League this weekend. The Welshman, aged 29, plays for Gateshead, who entertain promotion-chasing Wrexham at their International Stadium (3pm). Swansea-Born defender Barrow played for Swansea City youth, Briton Ferry Athletic, Port Talbot Town, Tamworth and Macclesfield before joining […]
Newport County play two fixtures in three days over the New Year Period, travelling to play Cheltenham Town on Saturday before entertaining Exeter City on Monday, January 1 (both 3pm). Only after those crucial League Two fixtures will manager Michael Flynn focus on the Emirates FA Cup tie against Leeds United at Rodney Parade on […]
Newport County are experiencing the ups and downs of football as the year comes to an end. The problem is that there have been more downs than ups. Their 2-0 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers was a major blow to their League Two hopes, while the dismissal of captain Joss Labadie was described as a ‘disgusting […]
Former Cardiff City players Gareth Ainsworth and Joe Jacobson will test Newport County’s League Two play-off resolve at Adams Park this afternoon (Boxing Day, 3pm). Wycombe manager Ainsworth, nicknamed ‘Wild Thing’ since before he played for the Bluebirds, send his team out against visitors who are unbeaten in four fixtures. That nickname came from his […]
