Newport County’s interim manager Wayne Hatswell said his side’s 3-0 win over Scunthorpe United at Rodney Parade was dedicated to Michael Flynn. Flynn, who earlier in the week had negotiated an amicable departure from his post as manager after four-and-a-half years, said his farewells to the players on Friday, but wasn’t at the ground to watch them move to within a point of the play-off places with their best win of the season. “It was a good day at the office and we got back to winning ways. The first goal was key because it put them on the back foot and gave us the belief we needed to go on to win the game,” said Hatswell, formerly Flynn’s right-hand man.

Flynn has been in charge since 2017 and is reportedly handing over the reigns to his assistant Wayne Hatswell who played for the Exiles during the 2011-12 season. Former Newport County manager and Sunderland defender Len Ashurst has died at the age of 82. Ashurst made 409 appearances for the Black Cats – a club record for an outfield player – before moving into management.

By Tom Prosser Newport County boss Michael Flynn believes his side will see benefits both on and off the pitch due to the new Friday evening initiative which sees the Exiles travel to Harrogate this evening. In the coming months, County will see a further three away games moved from the traditional Saturday afternoon slot. This idea is based around saving League Two clubs from having to pay for hotels as they now have the full day to travel to their away fixtures.

The winger becomes County’s 14th addition of the summer transfer window and has penned a contract until the end of the 2021/22 campaign, with Swansea having the option to recall him in January. He is the son of Kevin Cooper who played for the likes of Cardiff and Wolves before a spell at Newport County during the 2008-09 season.

Newport County manager Mike Flynn remained upbeat despite his team suffering a first defeat of the season at Mansfield on Saturday. The men from Rodney Parade had started the 2020-21 campaign with back-to-back 1-0 away wins, but a third straight trip on the road proved a step too far. Mansfield goals came from George Maris and Ollie Clarke either side of a Newport equaliser from Robbie Willmott with all three strikes coming in the first half.
