By Paul Jones Harry Wilson has praised Neco Williams’ “courage and bravery” for playing in Wales’ World Cup opener on Monday following the death of his grandfather. Williams’ grandfather died on Sunday and the Nottingham Forest full-back shared the sad news on social media after playing in Wales’ 1-1 draw against the United States. “Yesterday […]
Harry Wilson has warned England that Wales will be no World Cup pushovers. Wales joined England, the United States and Iran in Group B at Qatar by beating Ukraine in Sunday’s play-off final in Cardiff. The two home nations will meet in the final round of group fixtures at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on November 29.
It’s coming. D-day for Wales in their bid to make the World Cup finals. But few things are certain about this fixture, including the eventual full starting team that manager Robert Page will plump for. Daniel Parker reckons nine are nailed on, but two more will keep us guessing . . . and arguing. Sunday 5th June – it’s getting a bit close for comfort now, isn’t it? We’re less than three weeks away from Wales men’s golden opportunity to end 64 years of hurt by qualifying for a World Cup, and there remain a host of Rusmfeldian “known unknowns” in play.
Fulham boss Marco Silva has told Swansea City the justification for Ryan Manning’s red card is evident in the wound on the leg of Wales star Harry Wilson. Manning was sent off for a tackle on Fulham’s Wilson in the 42nd minute of Tuesday night’s home 5-1 thrashing for the Swans. The score was goalless at the time and as well as disputing that the challenge was worthy of a straight red card, Swans head coach Russell Martin also claimed the dismissal ruined what had been an even contest up to that point.
By Paul Jones Harry Wilson is planning a double celebration this summer – promotion to the Premier League with Fulham and a trip to the World Cup with Wales. Both ambitions look very credible as the striker’s season enters a crucial period for both club and country. Wilson was at Cardiff City Stadium last weekend, […]
Robert Page has told his Wales players they need to be more ruthless if they are to fulfill their World Cup ambition. Wales face Estonia in Tallinn on Monday night, desperate to score the goals that will see them overtake the Czech Republic in the fight to secure a play-off spot in qualification for next year’s finals. Page’s side drew 2-2 with the Czechs in Prague on Friday, so still trail their rivals on goal difference, even though they have a game in hand.
Ethan Ampadu insists Wales have no fears that their Red Wall might be drowned out by thousands of noisy Turkey fans on Wedbnesday. The Wales midfielder know only between 500 and 1,000 Wales supporters are likely to be in the Olympic Stadium in Baku for their second Group A match of Euro 2020. Those fans – who have paid around £2,000 each for a week in Azerbaijan and gone against Welsh government advice – will be hugely outnumbered by Turkish fans who can reach Baku by car.
The fans are coming back to football, but for some it’s too late to say a proper goodbye. Fraser Watson reflects on a year of echoing stadia and says the real stars of the game cannot come back quickly enough. The game was essentially over, Rotherham’s fate all but sealed, but the most poignant moment was yet to come. A mere four months after undergoing chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Sol Bamba entered the fray as a late substitute for Josh Murphy.
Wales supporters watched on in excitement over the weekend as Harry Wilson and Gareth Bale both registered hat-tricks for their respective clubs at a crucial time, with EURO 2020 set to commence next month. The two players are integral for Robert Page’s side and both look certain to be central to Wales’ ambitions this summer – possibly paired up front together – so, to see them in such devastating goalscoring form must have been heartening for the stand-in manager. Bale dons the armband and offers a unique, world-class x-factor in the final third, whereas Wilson’s invention and craft is also hugely important.
Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy claims Harry Wilson could be gracing Liverpool’s team next season after the forward’s first senior hat-trick clinched a 4-0 win over Birmingham at St. Andrew’s. The on-loan Anfield forward scored twice in the first half before starting the move for substitute Mark Harris to score the third prior to grabbing the fourth to seal the Bluebirds’ biggest away win in 10 and a half years. Two of the 24-year-old’s goals were superbly-struck free-kicks while his first was hit from 22 yards with the outside of his left foot.
Mick McCarthy has admitted Cardiff City’s faltering promotion bid is likely to cost them their loan stars such as Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo. With realistic hopes of making the play-offs appearing to have gone following the 2-2 draw at home to Blackburn Rovers, the Bluebirds manager is readying himself for a summer of rebuilding. That is set to mean the departure of borrowed talent who might have stayed had the club managed to reach the Premier League.
Mick McCarthy insists he has not waved any magic wand in turning Cardiff City from Championship strugglers to play-off contenders. The veteran manger has overseen a huge turnaround in fortunes since succeeding Neil Harris.
