Geraint Thomas has no qualms about donning the pink jersey in the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday, despite inheriting it after race leader Remco Evenepoel’s withdrawal due to Covid. Evenepoel’s routine test on Sunday night came back positive, only a few hours after the Belgian world champion pipped Welsh star Thomas by a single second in the stage nine time trial to reclaim top spot in the general classification.

Geraint Thomas has drawn consolation from his move into second place in the general classification at the Giro d’Italia after a heartbreaking denial of a stage win. The Welsh star has overtaken Primoz Roglic to go second, 45 seconds back on pre-race favourite Remco Evenepoel and two seconds ahead of Slovenia’s Roglic.

Geraint Thomas will start Tuesday’s fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia in fifth place after moving up one spot in the general classification standings. The Welsh star will begin the lumpy stage from Venosa to Lago Laceno 58 seconds behind race leader Remco Evenepoel.

Geraint Thomas admitted he was lucky to escape unharmed after a crash disrupted stage two of the Giro d’Italia and ruled out Mark Cavendish. The Welsh star revealed he was forced to brake hard to avoid hitting fallen riders, but managed to battle back to the front of the peloton following a split caused by the crash.

All roads lead to the Eternal City – Rome – during the month of May for Geraint Thomas after he was confirmed in the INEOS Grenadiers line-up for the Giro d’Italia. Wales’ former Tour de France winner Thomas has a history of misfortune at the race but hopes to right those wrongs when the 106th edition begins on 6 May from Fossacesia Marina in the Abruzzo region, with a 19.6km time trial, and finishes on 28 May in Rome.

Geraint Thomas will try and roll back the years on Thursday as he bids to win a second gold medal for Wales – eight years after his first. The Welsh cycling legend finished on the podium at last month’s Tour de France but the 36-year-old will only have gold on his mind when he competes in the time trial at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Back in 2014, Thomas won gold in a red jersey in the road race at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, having already picked up a bronze in the individual time trial event.

When Geraint Thomas finishes the Tour de France and heads to the start line for the Commonwealth Games road race in Birmingham, it will be a chance for many people in Wales to reflect on how they helped him get there. Wales’ greatest-ever male cyclist will be going for gold, powered by his own talent and the funding supplied by everyone who has ever bought a ticket for the National Lottery. In fact, National Lottery funding could be said to have nurtured the former Tour de France winner’s journey from an eight-year-old boy in Cardiff to podiums on the Champs-Elysees and, hopefully, in central Birmingham.
