Rob Page says World Cup-bound Wales are already feeling the benefits of Gareth Bale’s move to the United States Bale joined MLS side Los Angeles FC this summer after his trophy-laden nine-year spell at Real Madrid came to an end. The 33-year Wales captain had previously been linked with a shock move to Sky Bet Championship club Cardiff, with national-team boss Page having said that Bale joining his hometown team “ticks all the boxes”.
Cardiff City manager Steve Morison insists he will not be bounced into making a poor striker signing just to get the critics off his back. Morison’s men slumped to another derby day defeat – their fifth in a row – on Sunday when they lost 2-0 in the Severnside derby at Bristol City. Morison was frustrated with his team’s finishing ability, or lack of it, and said he was fed up of defending his strikers over missed opportunities.
Sheyi Ojo believes he can become the derby day decider for Cardiff City at Bristol City in the Severnside clash. The Bluebirds have suffered a run of five successive derby defeats, but their encouraging start to the campaign has given them optimism ahead of Sunday’s noon showdown. Boss Steve Morison was the first to highlight his side lost both the home and away clashes to arch-rivals Swansea City and Bristol City last season – and pledged to stop the rot in the 2022-23 campaign.
Russell Martin has revealed he must sell Swansea City “assets” such as Joel Piroe if he is to strengthen a squad weakened by long term injuries. The Swans head coach decided to lay bare the policy of the club’s American owners in response to questioning after his team’s 2-0 home defeat to Luton Town on Saturday. Martin’s team have won just once in their opening five games of the Championship campaign, are now winless in their last seven home games, and have lost key defender Joel Latibeaudiere for at least three months with a shoulder injury.
By Gareth James Joel Latibeaudiere will miss at least the next three months of the season following the shoulder injury he suffered in Swansea City’s midweek draw with Millwall. The defender – who dislocated his shoulder in the first half and required pain-killing gas while the joint was re-set – is unlikely to play again […]
Steve Morison believes Cardiff City have “a swagger” that is helping build an impressive start to their Championship season. The Bluebirds manager was happy with a 0-0 draw away to West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night, a result that kept his new-look team inside the early play-off positions. Despite a huge turnover of players in the summer – conducted on a shoestring budget – Morison’s team have lost just once in their opening four matches and have collected seven points.
Byline David Williams Steve Morison is hoping his old Millwall mate Jed Wallace doesn’t take advantage when Cardiff City head to the Hawthorns on Tuesday night. Wallace made his Millwall debut playing in the same side as Morison at Bradford in 2017 and went on to play alongside him through to the end of the […]
Russell Martin has told Swansea City fans he takes responsibility for the collapse of their two-goal lead against Millwall that cost them two precious Championship points. The Swans head coach insists the collective lack of authority that resulted in two own goals in injury time – and a 2-2 home draw – is down to him. Martin was angered by one of his benched players – understood to be Jamie Paterson – punching the ball back towards the visitors and enabling them to take a quick throw-in, from which they scored their equaliser.
Mahlon Romeo has told his Cardiff City teammates they must set higher standards if they want to continue their impressive start to the Championship season. The Bluebirds defender – who arrived from Millwall as part of manager Steve Morison’s summer revolution – is demanding his teammates raise their expectations as they find themselves fifth in the table after three matches with their next game away to West Brom on Wednesday night. Romeo has started in all three of Cardiff’s matches so far and the 26-year-old looks as if he will be a key player for the club this season.
By Gareth James Michael Obafemi believes Swansea City can build quickly on their first win of the season – starting with the chance of back-to-back victories on Tuesday night. Millwall are the visitors to the Swansea.com Stadium where Russell Martin’s side will be hoping to extend the momentum of their weekend 1-0 win at Blackpool. […]
The JD Cymru Premier returns tonight celebrating its 30th anniversary season – but Wales’ national league continues to battle against a lack of mainstream support. Since its inception in 1991, when the FAW succumbed to international pressure from other FIFA nations over its lack of its own dedicated national league, the league has endured a […]
Cardiff City boss Steve Morison believes his young striker Isaak Davies was hung out to dry in the recent transfer stalemate with Burnley. A fee of £2.5m was allegedly offered by last season’s Premier League fall guys to Cardiff for the 20-year-old earlier this week and was immediately turned down by the Bluebirds. But Morison believes the way in which the deal was aired in public has left the player with a burden to carry when he returns to action after recovering from a knee injury.
Newport County assistant manager Carl Serrant believes his team’s notable EFL Cup win at Luton Town underlines the growing depth in the Exiles’ squad. James Waite scored the late winner as League Two County upset Championship side Luton in the Carabao Cup first round, winning 3-2 at Kenilworth Road. Luton went ahead on 30 minutes courtesy of a stunning 35-yard drive into the top corner by Carlos Mendes Gomes, but were pegged back six minutes later as Lewis Collins equalised.
By Daniel Parker So, an England football team has finally won a major tournament and it hasn’t been a totally unbearable experience for the rest of us (something I never thought I’d write). The enhanced profile this summer’s European Championships has enjoyed – partly as a result of media interest in the English team’s progress, […]
“Geeky” Romaine Sawyers is the man to boot-up the newly unboxed Cardiff City, according to manager Steve Morison. Sawyers scored the only goal of the game as a summer-assembled Cardiff began their Championship campaign with a 1-0 victory at home to Premier League drop-outs Norwich City. The midfielder arrived as one of 13 new players recruited by Morison this summer and will be the guiding force in smoothing the joins, says his boss.
Making predictions in sport always leaves the predictor in a somewhat precarious position. “You can’t win anything with kids,” said Alan Hansen on Match Of The Day following Manchester Untied’s opening day 3-1 defeat away to Aston Villa in August 1995. Hansen’s words of warning have become a haunting catchphrase: by the end of 1995/96, Manchester United had won a Premier League and FA Cup double.
By Matthew Burgess The New Saints have announced the shock departure of head coach Anthony Limbrick following their elimination from the Europa Conference League this week. A goalless draw at home to Vikingur Reykjavik brought the Saints’ disappointing European campaign to an end on Tuesday night. The Cymru Premier champions were unable to progress in […]
By Daniel Parker The 2021-22 season was far from a vintage year for any of Wales’ three Football League Clubs. Swansea City fans had an historic derby double over rivals Cardiff to celebrate but little else; with Russell Martin’s side playing attractive football but ultimately unable to eke out any kind of consistency en route […]
By Matthew Burgess New Saints manager Anthony Limbrick admitted his side fell short of quality, following last night’s Europa Conference League stalemate against Vikingur Reykjavik. The Cymru Premier champions endured a frustrating night at Park Hall, registering a single shot on target as they found themselves unable to find a response to a 2-0 first-leg […]
Both The New Saints and Newtown face an uphill task to stay in Europe after defeats in the first legs of their Europa Conference League ties. The New Saints were disappointed in losing 2-0 at Icelandic champions Vikingur Reykjavík, while Newtown were hammered 4-1 in Slovakia by Spartak Trnava. It means both Welsh Premier clubs have it all to do in the second legs at home next week. The Saints endured a difficult first half in Iceland and Leo Smith’s foul on Ari Sigurpálsson resulted in a penalty which Kristall Máni Ingason converted.
