By Paul Jones James Rowberry believes Newport County have proven they have the stomach for a festive promotion surge. The County manager was full of praise for the manner in which his team fought back from 2-0 down at half-time to beat Sutton United 3-2 at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night. Matty Dolan’s stoppage-time penalty […]
By Paul Jones Swansea City plan to shake up their player recruitment strategy with two new positions following the departure of Andy Scott. The former Brentford head of recruitment and Watford sporting director has left his role as head of recruitment at the Swans. The club insists Scott’s decision to move on after two-and-a-half years […]
Jamie Paterson has insisted he is not a diver and he should not have been booked in Swansea City’s 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. The Swans midfielder was shown a yellow card for simulation in the first-half of the weekend loss at the Riverside Stadium after tumbling under a challenge from Boro goalkeeper Luke Daniels. But Paterson is adamant that referee Andy Davies made the wrong call and that the Swans should have been awarded a penalty, instead.
Steve Morison has claimed Cardiff City delivered a “positive performance” despite another home defeat that has put them back in relegation trouble. The Bluebirds manager insisted there was not much wrong with his team’s display in their 3-2 reverse against Sheffield United, aside from Sean Morrison’s sending off which his namesake said had “killed off” his team’s hopes of a victory. It was Cardiff’s second defeat in three matches and leaves them just one place above the Championship relegation zone, although they have a five-point lead over Peterborough United, who also lost.
Cardiff City manager Steve Morison has claimed no-one cares whether his team win at home or away, so long as the points are gathered. The Bluebirds return to the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, looking to build on their away victory at Luton Town last week, which gave Morison his third victory since he took over from Mick McCarthy. Two of those three wins have come away from home, with Morison’s home record so far showing one win against Huddersfield, but two defeats – to QPR and Hull City.
By Tom Prosser Russell Martin says the Swansea City fans have played a key part in Jamie Paterson’s success so far this season and he hopes his fine form continues as the Swans look to get back on track away to Middlesbrough on Saturday. The manager cites the “instant connection” between Paterson and the Swansea faithful as a big factor in him hitting the ground running for his new team. Paterson, 29, was a free agent up until a few days before the 2021-22 campaign after leaving Bristol City and having a trial with Middlesbrough.
Gemma Grainger has praised her Wales players for delivering one of the best displays since she took charge, despite their 2-0 defeat to France on Tuesday night. It was a first loss of the Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign for Wales and it leaves them unlikely to finish top of Group I to gain automatic entry to the tournament finals. Even if Wales were to reverse the result when France visit Llanelli next year, Grainger’s side would still be relying on the group leaders to drop points elsewhere if Wales were to end up topping the group.
By Tom Prosser Cardiff City legend and record appearance holder Phil Dwyer has sadly passed away at the age of 68. Legend is an often overused word in sport but Dwyer well and truly goes down as a Bluebirds great and is one of the most popular players of all-time amongst the Cardiff City faithful. Dwyer was born just a stone’s throw away from Ninian Park in Grangetown and joined the club at the age of 16.
The future of Bangor City has been thrown into doubt after the club failed to meet an FAW disciplinary deadline over unpaid salaries worth almost £53,000 – but what now for one of Welsh football’s biggest club’s? The Cymru North club were given 31 days to fulfil outstanding salary obligations to former players and coaches […]
“A beautiful, hostile atmosphere,” is how Roberto Martinez described the cauldron of passion at the Cardiff City Stadium as his Belgium team drew 1-1 with Wales earlier this month. With Rob Page’s team having been drawn to meet Austria in the World Cup play-offs next March, the Red Wall must replicate and amplify that remarkable atmosphere. You rarely see the words beautiful and hostile sitting next to each other in a sentence.
Sophie Ingle has admitted Wales are unlikely to top their World Cup group – but the captain still insists they can get a positive result in France on Tuesday night. The Wales skipper leads her unbeaten team into the second of their two-game qualification period, following an impressive and highly professional 5-0 thrashing at home to Greece last Friday. But France in Brittany – who top Group I with maximum points and are ranked the fifth best team in the world – will prove by far the toughest test of the campaign so far for the Chelsea star and her improving team.
Ruben Colwill has praised the impact of manager Steve Morison, claiming his methods are behind Cardiff City’s upturn in form that is pulling them away from the Championship relegation zone. Colwill scored one of Cardiff’s goals in their 2-1 win at Luton Town at the weekend, which made it three wins from four matches under Morison. That sequence has enabled the club to extend the gap between themselves and Peterborough United – who are two places below them in 22nd spot – to five points.
Rob Page has paid tribute to Gary Speed on the 10th anniversary of his former teammate’s death – crediting him with sparking the revival in Welsh international football. As current caretaker manager Page now looks ahead to a World Cup play-off semi-final at home to Austria in March, but he has also spoken of his gratitude to Speed for planting the seeds of success during his time in charge of the national team. Saturday marks exactly 10 years since Speed was found dead at his home in Chester on November 27, 2011, aged 42.
Gemma Grainger praised her team for their professionalism in overcoming awful conditions to hammer Greece 5-0 and keep their World Cup qualification dream on track. The Wales manager was full of admiration for the way her players stuck to their task at Parc y Scarlets where a howling gale, rain, hail and snow failed to deflect them. Two goals for the impressive Ceri Holland and others for skipper Sophie Ingle, Kayleigh Green and Natasha Harding demonstrated Wales’ superiority and put them in good heart ahead of their clash with Group I leaders France on Tuesday.
By Rob Carbon The last time David Edwards was involved in a semi-final was for Wales against Portugal in the Euros in 2016. Five years on the former Wolves midfielder will be in the thick of the action tonight (Friday) when Bala Town take on Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Nathaniel MG Cup semi-final at […]
By Tom Prosser The Cardiff City fans still haven’t been able to cheer a first half goal so far this season and manager Steve Morison says he “doesn’t really understand” the fans negativity during their 1-0 defeat at home to Hull. The Cardiff fans voiced their frustration at the end of both halves and were disappointed that their side couldn’t kick on from their recent back-to-back victories. “I don’t really understand it, if I’m honest,” said Morison.
Russell Martin has praised his Swansea City players for their patience and dominance after a near 900-pass runaround of Barnsley at Oakwell. The Swans made 899 completed passes in their 2-0 victory on Wednesday night, even though they managed only three shots on target. Martin made no apologies for the lack of firepower in a dominant first-half where the home side chased the ball, but the visitors failed to have a strike at goal.
By Tom Prosser Steve Morison has told his players to keep cutting the gap between Cardiff City and the clubs above them – including Swansea City. The Bluebirds manager will be bidding to oversee a third successive victory when they welcome Hull City to the Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday night. Three more points would stretch Cardiff further away from the relegation zone and move them towards the clubs bunched in mid-table, including the Swans.
Jess Fishlock has sparked a debate on equal pay for Wales international footballers across the men’s and women’s teams. Fishlock – the most capped player in Welsh football history with 127 appearances and recently voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the American league – would like to see appearance fees for pulling on the red shirt the same for both sexes. The Wales midfielder makes the suggestion in a special one-off S4C documentary, being screened on Wednesday night.
By Gareth James Russell Martin has admitted he was sure Matt Grimes was leaving Swansea City before he signed a new contract last week. Swansea captain Grimes was recently linked with moves to Watford and Fulham but has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract to stay in Wales. And Swansea manager Martin insists Grimes, who was […]
