Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has challenged his players to prove they belong at a higher level as they prepare for Tuesday’s FA Cup replay at Sheffield United. The National League promotion contenders face a test of their mettle as their fourth-round tie against the Sky Bet Championship high-flyers is played to a conclusion at Bramall Lane on Tuesday. The two sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw when they met at the Racecourse Ground last month and now there is the added incentive of knowing victory will earn a home tie against Premier League Tottenham.
Wales striker Brennan Johnson underlined his rich talent once more with the goal that enabled Nottingham Forest to earn a priceless victory over Leeds United. The 21-year-old scored his seventh goal of the season at the City Ground as Steve Cooper’s side moved further away from the Premier League relegation zone. The Welsh manager insisted his players deserved their victory over free-falling Leeds, even though Forest were not at their best.
Sabri Lamouchi has told his Cardiff City players it’s got to be no more Mr. Nice Guys if they are to save their skins in the Championship. The Bluebirds have now gone 13 matches in all competitions without a win following their 1-0 defeat at Hull City. They are still just above the relegation zone, but the three clubs below them all have two matches in hand and if they take four or more points then Cardiff will be rock bottom.
Russell Martin may well be sacked by Swansea City’s owners– or decide to quit the club – according to their former Wales striker Ian Walsh. The Swans crashed to a 4-3 defeat at home to Birmingham City on Saturday, which followed a disastrously lopsided transfer window, prompting Walsh to launch a blistering attack on owners Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan. Head coach Martin admitted he had “never felt as low” after the end of a week in which he had suggested the responsibility for the club failing to bring in a single new player in January – but letting six leave – lay with the American owners and not those working in Swansea.
Swansea City failed to sign a single player in the January transfer window after the club’s plan to bring in West Bromwich Albion striker Karlan Grant on loan backfired. In the dying minutes of Tuesday night’s window, Swansea’s attempt to secure a loan for the West Brom forward fell through. The deal was expected to see Grant join the Swans on loan for the remainder of the season – filling some of the gaps exposed by the six players who have left the club this month.
By David Williams Newport County AFC have announced the arrival of Charlie McNeill on a loan deal until the end of the season. The 19-year-old forward arrives from Premier League giants Manchester United, with the move subject to EFL approval and international clearance. After impressing at youth level, Charlie has put pen to paper on […]
Nathan Jones believes Southampton can take on Newcastle’s might by shocking them in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. The saints fell to a 1-0 loss in the opening leg and were reduced to 10 men when Duje Caleta-Car was sent off in the 86th minute at St Mary’s last week. After a slow start […]
By Paul Jones Wrexham could almost see the lights of the fifth round of the FA Cup but their hopes were plunged into darkness by a late John Egan equaliser. The National League side were in dreamland after talisman Paul Mullin put the Welsh side ahead in the tie for the first time in the […]
Sol Bamba insists his new boss at Cardiff City, Sabri Lamouchi, commands respect and has the tactical nous to keep the club in the Championship. Bamba has rejoined the club he enjoyed success with as a player as their new assistant and right-hand man to Frenchman Lamouchi. The pair worked together when Lamouchi was manager of the Ivory Coast national team between 2012 and 2014 and Bamba was a player in that squad alongside former Swansea City star Wilfried Bony.
By Harry Corish Cardiff City have appointed former Nottingham Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi as their new head coach. The deal also means a welcome return for Bluebirds folk hero Sol Bamba who has also been announced as the First team coach, joining up with his former coach and returning to Cardiff just two years after […]
Wales winger Sorba Thomas has swapped a relegation fight with Huddersfield for a promotion chase with Blackburn Rovers after being told he had fallen down the pecking order with the Terriers. Thomas – who went to the World Cup with Wales only two months ago – was told his chances were going to be limited at Huddersfield after they brought in some new additions. The club are languishing in the Championship relegation zone, three points adrift of Cardiff City who are in 21st place.
By David Williams Wales face extra match stages in the Nations League from next year. Rob Page’s men – who were relegated from the top tier of the tournament after they were beaten by Poland in September – could have to get through play-offs to get back to Group A. UEFA plan to introduce a […]
By Hannah Blackwell Robert Page has apologised to Welsh fans and admitted that he and his team had let them down during the World Cup, with their below par performances in Qatar. The head coach from Tylorstown has insisted that his team will learn from the mistakes, as they aim to qualify for the 2024 […]
By Paul Jones Wales’ Steve Cooper says Nottingham Forest’s history is something those currently at the club embrace and want to use as motivation as they look to create “new moments”. Forest’s honours list famously features a league title and two European Cup triumphs under Brian Clough, who also oversaw them winning four League Cups. […]
Former Swansea City manager Paul Clement has lost his job at Everton in the fall-out from Frank Lampard’s sacking. Clement – who was Swansea manager throughout 2017 – was assistant to Lampard, but has left the club along with the rest of the former England star’s backroom team of Joe Edwards, Chris Jones and Ashley Cole. Everton, who are now searching for their seventh manager in the last seven years, had been the latest port of call for Clement, who was sacked by the Swans five years ago.
Swansea City remain just three points off the Championship play-off places despite only two wins in their last 12 league matches. The Swans fought back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers, although head coach Russell Martin admitted he had mixed feelings over another hot and cold display. “I am happy with a point,” said Martin after Jay Fulton’s late equaliser had cancelled out Jamal Lowe’s goal on his debut against his former club.
Dean Whitehead has admitted crisis club Cardiff City need help from every direction to prevent their season from imploding. Angry fans held a demonstration against owner Vincent Tan before their latest defeat, a 1-0 home loss to Millwall that leaves the Bluebirds just above the Championship relegation zone, but with two clubs beneath them with games in hand. In the space of a few days, Cardiff have been told they can only sign loan players in this transfer window, embarked on a search for their third manager of the season, been revealed by court papers to have tried to insure Emiliano Sala for £20m the day after he was killed, and heard those disgruntled fans rise up and call for the hierarchy to quit.
Swansea City are set to give Morgan Whittaker the chance to prove his worth at the club after valuing him at £3m. Head coach Russell Martin has insisted the striker will be in his squad for Saturday’s game at Queen Park Rangers – a move that could rule out any January transfer elsewhere. The 22-year-old spent the first half of the season in a successful loan spell at Plymouth Argyle where he scored nine goals in 31 appearances.
By Gareth James Dean Whitehead has admitted his stewardship of Cardiff City got off to the worst possible start. The caretaker Bluebirds boss was on the wrong end of a 5-2 hammering by Leeds United in their FA Cup third round replay at Elland Road. Whitehead – installed as interim manager at the crisis club […]
Hal Robson-Kanu has predicted that equal pay for international players will inspire more girls to play football for Wales. The former Wales striker described the decision as a “monumental move” after Wales’ men’s and women’s senior players learned they will be paid the same for the first time on international duty under the terms of a new equal pay agreement. The deal comes into place immediately and covers the period up to and including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
