The Cymru Premier title race between Connah’s Quay and The New Saints will come to a dramatic conclusion this afternoon on the final day of the season (12:00). Last season’s champions and current Cymru Premier leaders Connah’s Quay have a two-point lead at the top of the table. The Nomads will secure the league title […]
Gavin Foxall has been a bit of a lone figure at Newport County’s 56 games to date this season. But all that is about to change on Tuesday night at Rodney Parade. The County chairman knows that the first leg of the League Two play-off semi-finals is going to be very different to all the rest, and not just because there is a trip to Wembley at stake.
By Gareth James Connah’s Quay Nomads fans and supporters of The New Saints will be able to see their title shoot-out unfold on screen this weekend – in simultaneous separate matches. As the race for the JD Cymru Premier title goes down to the final day of the season on Saturday, S4C’s Sgorio programme is […]
Neco Williams’ little brother wants to follow the Liverpool star into the Wales team. Keelan Williams, a 17-year-old who left Anfield to join Burnley, reckons he has already surpassed his older sibling on one front by beating him at the crossbar challenge in a park during lockdown. Now, he wants to get another one over on Neco by being quicker to a full Wales cap after the young defender captained Wales U18s against England last month.
Wales captain Sophie Ingle is playing for the “best team in the world” according to former England striker Eni Aluko. Ingle is preparing for Chelsea’s Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona this weekend having already pocketed a second successive Women’s Super League title medal. The Wales skipper – now playing regularly in midfield rather than defence for both her country and her club – was part of the Blues’ line-up that lifted the domestic league trophy last weekend with a thumping 5-0 win over Reading.
Swansea City and Newport County will be playing their home play-off matches in front of fans for the first time this season. The move has been confirmed by the Welsh Government who have given the green light for both clubs’ ties to be played in front of supporters as pilot events as part of the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. The go-ahead means both Welsh clubs will not be disadvantaged as they might have been after English clubs were given the okay to allow a limited number of fans back for their home ties.
Newport County goalkeeper Tom King believes Forest Green Rovers will badly miss former Rodney Parade hero Jamille Matt when the two clubs clash in the play-offs. County clinched their place in the League Two mini-series after a 1-1 draw at Southend at the weekend, where they were indebted to King for a penalty save that kept the scores level. It ensured the Exiles finished fifth in the final table, on the same points as sixth-placed Forest Green who they will now meet over two legs.
Bullish Barnsley manager Valerien Ismael has warned Swansea City the momentum is all with his team as they prepare to host Swansea City in the first leg of the Championship play-offs. Ismael is in confident mood after his club completed a hugely impressive second half of the season during which they won 13 out of 19 games. Only Watford managed to achieve a better run in.
The JD Cymru Premier title race will be decided on the final day of the season after Connah’s Quay and The New Saints proved too strong on the penultimate weekend. A 3-0 win over Bala Town temporarily put The New Saints back top of the table, before Connah’s Quay ran out 4-0 winners against 10-man […]
Mike Flynn has told his Newport County team there are no medals for those who stumble at the final hurdle. Flynn’s promotion-chasers play their final match of the season today with their League Two play-off fate very much in their own hands. The Exiles travel to face already-relegated Southend United knowing a point will seal them a place in the end-of-campaign shoot-out.
Connah’s Quay will know whether the Cymru Premier title is within their grasp by the time tomorrow afternoon’s late match against Caernarfon Town starts (5.15, live on Sgorio). Anything less than a win for The New Saints in their earlier game against Barry Town (2:30) would leave Connah’s Quay within three points of retaining the […]
Morgan Whittaker has admitted he wasn’t surprised to be racially abused on Instagram – he was actually expecting it. The Swansea City striker became the fourth player from the Championship club to be racially abused this season via social media, and it came during the official Football League blackout. Having scored a vital goal in the win over relegation threatened Derby County last weekend, his former club, Whittaker said he was “buzzing”. Then came the horrible realisation that his goal had sparked a terrible reaction.
Rob Page plans to pick the brains of Chris Coleman before Wales begin another Euro finals adventure. Caretaker manager Page intends to sound out Coleman for advice, having already drafted in one of the former manager’s assistants, Kit Symons to the cause. Five years ago, Coleman led Wales all the way to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and Page – who was last month confirmed in charge in the absence of Ryan Giggs – wants to glean the inside track on how Wales can make a similar impact at this year’s delayed tournament.
Connah’s Quay and The New Saints both returned to winning ways last night to take the JD Cymru Premier title race into the final two games of the season. Connah’s Quay came from behind to win 2-1 at Barry Town, meanwhile The New Saints picked up their first win in four games at Penybont. The […]
Wales supporters watched on in excitement over the weekend as Harry Wilson and Gareth Bale both registered hat-tricks for their respective clubs at a crucial time, with EURO 2020 set to commence next month. The two players are integral for Robert Page’s side and both look certain to be central to Wales’ ambitions this summer – possibly paired up front together – so, to see them in such devastating goalscoring form must have been heartening for the stand-in manager. Bale dons the armband and offers a unique, world-class x-factor in the final third, whereas Wilson’s invention and craft is also hugely important.
Connah’s Quay and The New Saints are looking to return to winning ways this evening as the JD Cymru Premier title race stops off in south Wales. The two title challengers make respective journeys to Barry Town and Penybont in the knowledge there is no margin for error, with only three games of the season […]
Thierry Henry insists sport’s social media boycott must be only “the start” of action against online abuse as South Wales Police continue their investigations into more racism directed at a Swansea City player. The boycott – which started at 3pm on Friday and ran until 11.59pm on Monday – saw a coalition of football’s largest governing bodies and organisations, including the Football Association, Premier League and EFL, among those to go silent on social media in a show of solidarity against online abuse. European governing body UEFA also joined in, as well as Scottish and Irish football, England Rugby, Scottish Rugby, British Cycling, the Rugby Football League, British Horseracing, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Lawn Tennis Association, International Tennis Federation and others.
Morgan Whittaker insists he meant no disrespect to Derby County when he celebrated his first league goal for Swansea City. The Swans striker – who was allowed to leave Derby for a cut-price £700,000 in February – put a finger in each ear as if to block out the noise when he hit the equaliser in his side’s 2-1 win at the weekend. It was a goal that has helped push his former club and their manager Wayne Rooney to the brink or relegation from the Championship .
Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy claims Harry Wilson could be gracing Liverpool’s team next season after the forward’s first senior hat-trick clinched a 4-0 win over Birmingham at St. Andrew’s. The on-loan Anfield forward scored twice in the first half before starting the move for substitute Mark Harris to score the third prior to grabbing the fourth to seal the Bluebirds’ biggest away win in 10 and a half years. Two of the 24-year-old’s goals were superbly-struck free-kicks while his first was hit from 22 yards with the outside of his left foot.
The title race in the JD Cymru Premier is expected to go to the wire after Connah’s Quay and The New Saints cancelled each other out in the final meeting of the season between the two sides. In a nervy encounter at the Deeside Stadium, a tense performance from both sides ensured chances remained at […]
