Wales Hope Swansea Way Will Prove a Wales Route for Ashley Phillips

Craig Bellamy is hoping Ashley Phillips’ strong Swansea links convince the Tottenham Hotspur defender to switch back to Wales from England.

Phillips, who was born in Salford and has a Welsh mother, has links to several national teams.

Head coach Bellamy is expected to reveal his squad for the World Cup play-offs on March 17 and Phillips could feature in the selection if he opts to declare for Wales.

Earlier in his career he played for Wales at under-16 level, but later moved into England’s youth system.

Currently on loan at Stoke City, the 20-year-old revealed on the Pottteries club’s podcast he has tight family links with Swansea.

"That was my first step up at international level," Phillips said of his time with Wales U16s.

"I remember in that Wales camp we played England and beat them 3-2 and I think that's what kicked me off to going into the England set-up.

“My mum was born in Swansea so my mum's side and my Gramps’ is Welsh, from Swansea."

Phillips started out at Blackburn Rovers before completing a move to Tottenham in August 2023.

During the previous campaign he was included on the Spurs first-team bench on eight occasions, though he has not yet made his senior appearance for the club.

At present, Phillips is gaining experience on loan with Stoke City. Across two loan spells with the Championship side, he has already made more than 70 appearances.

Although he was called up to England’s under-21 squad in November and is also eligible to play for Nigeria, sources suggest Welsh football officials have now reached out to him.

Their intention is to outline the opportunity for him to become an important part of Wales’ senior national team in the near future.

The move comes as Wales prepare for a decisive stage in their World Cup qualification campaign later this month.

They are scheduled to meet Bosnia and Herzegovina in a play-off semi-final in Cardiff on 26 March.
Victory would see them host either Italy or Northern Ireland on 31 March, with the winner securing a spot at this summer’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The situation is especially significant because Wales are currently dealing with defensive injury problems.

Captain Ben Davies has been ruled out since January after suffering a broken ankle, while West Brom defender Chris Mepham is also sidelined with a hamstring injury that will keep him out for more than a month.

Wales have reached the World Cup finals only twice in their history, first in 1958 and most recently in 2022.

Now, with a third qualification within reach, the team could potentially add Phillips to their defensive options as they attempt to secure their place on the global stage.
