Plymouth Argyle have refused to comment on reports claiming Gareth Bale could soon become the latest global sports icon to step into the world of football club ownership.
The Wales legend and former Real Madrid star is claimed to be at the centre of a potential takeover at League One side Plymouth Argyle.
The 34-year-old is said to be fronting an American-backed consortium that has formally expressed interest in acquiring the club, with early-stage talks held between the group—believed to include members of the Storch family—and Argyle’s leadership.
As first reported by The Telegraph, the process remains in its very early stages, but Bale is being positioned as the public face of the investment, much like his former Madrid teammate Luka Modrić was with Swansea back in April.
Bale’s potential involvement with an English club is significant given his stature in Welsh football.
The five-time Champions League winner is the all-time top scorer for the Wales men’s national team with 41 goals in 111 appearances.
He retired from football in January 2023, just months after representing his country at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — their first appearance at the tournament since 1958.
Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett has been transparent about his ongoing search for external investment.
A prior deal in principle, agreed in March, fell through in May due to delays and lack of critical information.
Addressing supporters recently, Hallett expressed frustration over the collapse.

He said: “As you know, we have been in talks with a prospective new investor in our club for over a year. Those talks led to an application for approval of that investment being lodged with the EFL in February.
“Unfortunately, negotiations have taken too long and the key information that both we and the EFL required to complete the deal has not been forthcoming. I no longer believe that news of the new investor is imminent.
“As a result, existing shareholders (I, Argyle Green and the Holliday family) will provide the funds to ensure that we stay on course with our plans.
“This means making funds available to ensure we have a competitive football budget to aim to return us to the Championship as soon as possible, as well as continued investment in Foulston Park. Our budget next season will be twice that we had the last time we were in League One.
“I completely understand that this will be very frustrating for fans, as it is extremely frustrating for me and the rest of the Argyle board.
“I have said constantly that my resources can enable us to be a sustainable Championship club, but that if we wish to aspire beyond that we would need new investment.
“I can provide some of that new investment, with the Holliday family and Argyle Green's help, but not all.”
The timing of Bale’s potential involvement could be pivotal.

Argyle were relegated from the Championship in May after suffering a final-day defeat to Leeds United and are now preparing for life in League One for the first time since 2022.
Last week, the club appointed former Watford boss Tom Cleverley as their new head coach.
The 35-year-old signed a three-year deal after replacing Miron Muslic, who left for German side Schalke.
Cleverley has become the fifth manager to take permanent charge at Home Park since December 2023.
