JD Welsh Cup Round Up . . . Who Played, Who Got Slayed

There were the usual mix of thrills, spills, upsets and slayed giants in the last 16 of the JD Welsh Cup, as David Roberts reports.

Trearddur Bay will be flying the flag for Tier 3 clubs in the JD Welsh Cup after they reached the quarter-finals on the back of a 5-3 win over Newport City in a thriller in north Wales.

There were three goals in added time as Newport clawed it back to a single goal difference but Liam Armstrong made things safe with a 95th minute fifth goal for the home side.

Llandudno were dealt another bitter cup blow a week after losing in the semi-finals of the Nathanial MG Cup as they conceded a 91st minute goal to lose 2-1 at Caerau Ely in the fourth round.

In a battle between two sides in the North and South sections of Tier 2 it was the Gogs who took the lead with an Adam Stephens goal in the 76th minute. But no sooner had their celebrations ended than Caerau struck back with a goal at the other end in the same minute by Dan Griffiths.

That left all to play for in the final 14 minutes and Stephens turned from hero to villain when he picked up yellow cards in the 86th and 90th minutes to leave his side a player short going into the dying embers of the match.

Caerau needed no second invitation to go for the jugular and a minute later their earlier goal scorer Griffiths tuned provider for Tim Parker to score the winner and send the Cardiff side into the quarter-finals.

Fellow JD Cymru South side Trefelin found their long trek north to face unbeaten Tier 3 Bangor City a step too far as they lost 2-0. Their cause wasn’t helped by Jasper Jones picking up a straight red card in the 19th minute.

Bangor finally broke the deadlock with a goal from Jack Smith in the 84th minute and then made the game safe with a 93rd minute effort from Sam Jones.

There was also an early sending off in the battle between two of the four remaining  JD Cymru Premier Sides as Penybont lost veteran Chris Venables to a straight red in only the seventh minute of their clash at home against Flint Town United.

That put them under the cosh but they managed to cope and the game ended goalless after 90 minutes and went to penalties. That ended in a 4-3 triumph for Flint after their Polish goalkeeper Dawid Szczepaniak save Nathan Wood’s second penalty for Penybont and sipper Maelk Davies missed.

That allowed Jake Phillips to step up and hit the target to win the game for Flint and send them into the last eight.

Barry Town United and Colwyn Bay were two more survivors from the top tier as they moved into the hat for the quarter finals. Barry were 4-0 winners at home against Gresford Athletic, while Colwyn Bay saw off Pontypridd 3-0.

Ollie Hulbert was the home hero at Jenner Park as he scored twice to steer Barry to a comfortable win. Ieuan Owen opened the scoring to put the Linnetts ahead in the 36th minute before Hulbert struck for the first time in the 53rd.

Hulbert’s second came in the 70th minute before Morgan Wigley wrapped things up with a 90th minute goal.

The Seagulls had a masterclass in finishing to thank for their easy ride at the USW Sports Park as Aaron Williams notched a hat-trick. He opened the scoring in the first half in the 31st minute and then added two more in the 54th and 66th minutes.

Ben Lightfoot was the Rhyl hero as he scored a 91st minute winner to send his side through with a 2-1 win at Porthmadog. The home side took the lead through an Osian Evans goal on the half-hour mark before Jack Perry levelled in the 77th minute.

In the other battle between two JD Cymru Prmeier sides Caernarfon Town beat Cardiff Met 4-2.
