Leon Britton reckons it would have been ‘very harsh’ if Swansea City has not handed Francesco Guidolin the manager’s job.
The Italian was confirmed on a two-year deal after months of speculation that Brendan Rodgers would return to the Liberty Stadium in the summer.
But midfielder Britton reckons there was little the club could do than reward Guidolin for guiding them to safety after being appointed in January.
The 33-year-old said: “If you look at our form over the last 15 games, it is hard to argue with the decision.
“What more could he have done? We are nearly in the top half, so I think the club have got the right man.
“There were names mentioned and the board have taken their time to work through those options, and I am sure he is the right one.
“It would have been very harsh not to give him the job.”
Guidolin took over from Garry Monk who was axed in December with the club fearing a return to the Championship.
And Britton has hailed the ex-Udinese’s uncomplicated approach to coaching which saw a dramatic turnaround in results after Christmas.
The Swans end their campaign against Manchester City on Sunday knowing victory could see them finish in the top half of the table.
Britton added: “I think in comparison to recent years he does not over-complicate things.
“He is a bit old school in that sense. He keeps it simple, whereas previous managers have had a lot of analysts go to work and there were a lot of meetings.
“We still do some of that but not as much. He keeps it basic.
“Training is simple but he has that good relationship with the players and we respect him.
“He is a good guy, he has a good relationship with the players and we all get along very well
