Brennan Johnson Aims to Boost his Wales World Cup Chances With Crystal Palace Switch

Brennan Johnson’s club-record move to Crystal Palace could prove pivotal for his chances of making the starting line-up for Wales at the World Cup finals this summer.

 

Johnson’s decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur has not only changed the current dynamic of his Premier League career, but also his hopes of reclaiming a starting place for Wales ahead of this summer’s World Cup, should Craig Bellamy’s side successfully navigate their qualification play-offs.

The 24-year-old winger has completed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Selhurst Park after Palace agreed a reported £35m fee with Tottenham, eclipsing the club’s previous transfer record.

Crucially for Johnson, the switch is expected to bring significantly more regular top-flight starts than he was likely to enjoy by remaining in north London – a factor that could strengthen his case for a consistent role in Wales’ starting XI.

Wales face Bosnia and Herzegovina at home in March in their play-off semi-final, before the winners take on either Italy or Northern Ireland at home for a place at the finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Johnson, who has 42 caps and seven international goals, endured a frustrating campaign at Spurs, starting just six Premier League matches under new head coach Thomas Frank.

That lack of club minutes coincided with a dip in his international standing, with the forward losing his place in the Wales starting line-up for two of the final three group matches in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner made it clear that Johnson’s pace and end product were central to the club’s determination to bring him to south London, and his endorsement underlines why the move could reinvigorate both his club and international prospects.

“I’m really delighted that Brennan has joined the club. He arrives very early in the window, so credit to the club for making this happen so quickly,” said Glasner.

“Brennan will give us options in our attacking play with his pace and goalscoring ability and with all the upcoming games he will be a valuable addition to the squad.”

Palace, currently 10th in the Premier League and fresh from a demanding debut campaign in European competition after winning the FA Cup, moved swiftly to secure Johnson’s signature. 

Glasner has previously voiced frustration at slow transfer windows, making the early capture of the Wales international particularly satisfying.

Palace have seen off competition from Bournemouth to land a player the Eagles have tracked for some time.

Johnson is expected to be available for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle United and is poised to play a prominent role in a Palace side facing a congested schedule across domestic and European fronts. 

Palace chairman Steve Parish believes the winger’s arrival is perfectly timed.

“We feel we are the perfect place for Brennan to continue his already impressive journey,” Parish said.

“His arrival bolsters our attacking options in what is proving our busiest season to date, competing on numerous fronts including, for the first time, in Europe.”

For Johnson, the move represents a chance to reset after a mixed spell at Tottenham. 

While he was Spurs’ top scorer last season with 18 goals in all competitions – including the Europa League final winner against Manchester United that ended the club’s 17-year trophy drought – his influence waned this term as he was largely restricted to a substitute’s role, scoring four times in 22 appearances.

Spurs, now 12th in the Premier League, have opted to cut their losses on a player they signed from Nottingham Forest for £47.5m in 2023. 

His departure also continues a striking trend at the club, with Tottenham having now sold their leading scorer from each of the past three seasons, following the exits of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Johnson himself expressed his enthusiasm for the next chapter of his career, one he hopes will bring regular football and renewed momentum.

“Crystal Palace are such a great club, one that I’ve always admired,” he said.

“It’s a great time for me to be here and join the journey that this club is on – I’m super-excited.”
