Wales’ New Breed Prove Warren Gatland Is Not Blind To Times That Are A Changing

Warren Gatland has put his faith in the boldness of youth with five uncapped players in his squad for the November Tests. It’s an uncharacteristic shifting of faith – in both players and playing style from the Wales coach, but Robin Davey says it reflects both individual form and the changing dynamics within regional rugby. Out with the old, in with the new – the clear theme of Tuesday’s Wales squad announcement for the autumn internationals as coach Warren Gatland prepares for his World Cup swansong in Japan in 2019. Out go Jamie Roberts, Gethin Jenkins (though he’s been sidelined with a knee injury and hasn’t played since April), Luke Charteris and Scott Wiiliams with a combined total of 344 caps and an average age of 32.

Bench Boy Shawn McCoulsky Scores When He Wants For County

Shawn McCoulsky is fast earning a reputation as a ‘super sub’ at Newport County after once again coming off the bench and scoring. The 20-year-old striker made it seven goals in 11 games since joining on loan from Bristol City this season as he scored five minutes after coming on to salvage a point against Mansfield Town last weekend to keep his side in sixth place in League Two. It was the third game in a row that McCoulsky had scored while coming off the bench and manager Michael Flynn admitted he is getting close to having to give him a start. Not that McCoulsky is worried, as long as he is scoring.

Chris Coleman Urged To Stick With Wales By Wowed Warnock

Chris Coleman has been urged to stick with the Dragonhood by born-again Welshman Neil Warnock. Coleman was among the bookies’ early favourites to become the new Leicester City manager and with Everton also seeking new leadership he could well find offers elsewhere as the merry-go-round unseats riders and opens opportunites. But Cardiff City boss Warnock reckons the man who guided his country to the Euro 2016 semi-finals should agree a new deal with Wales.

Paul Clement Says Swans Must Expose United Problems To Solve Their Own

Paul Clement believes Swansea City can become the latest club to expose Manchester United’s defensive problems and cause an upset in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield on Saturday which was partly due to the Terriers taking advantage of United’s hastily-assembled centre-back partnership. Phil Jones had limped off with the game at 0-0 and his replacement Victor Lindelof was directly responsible for what proved to be the winning goal.

Scott Of The Safari: I Felt I Was Looking Into The Lion’s Soul

Scott Baldwin has admitted he could have lost his hand, his career, and the chance to play with his young son as a result of stupidly smoothing a lion in a South African safari park. The 29-year-old Wales hooker finally returned to action with the Ospreys in last weekend’s Champions Cup defeat at Saracens after missing three matches and having to undergo four operations. In his first press conference since the incident in Bloemfontein he talked about how the severity of what happened to him only really hit home last week.

Welsh Rugby Reform Needs Unity – Not A War Between Money Men And The Blazers

You may have been here before. But as the subject of governance modernisation returns to the top of Welsh rugby’s agenda, Geraint Powell recalls previous failed attempts and sets out the core principles behind any success this time around. If so many have recognised for so long that Welsh rugby requires fundamental governance modernisation, why has it proven so damnably difficult to achieve? There has been some useful tinkering in recent years, including the creation of four sub-boards and, following the review by former High Court judge Sir Robert Owen, the addition of two non-executive directors.  But the latter actually increased the size of the WRU board from 18 to 20 and further away from the 8-12 person board, based on skill sets, that is now considered best practice.
