Chris Coleman has been urged to stick with the Dragonhood by born-again Welshman Neil Warnock.
Coleman was among the bookies’ early favourites to become the new Leicester City manager and with Everton also seeking new leadership he could well find offers elsewhere as the merry-go-round unseats riders and opens opportunites.
But Cardiff City boss Warnock reckons the man who guided his country to the Euro 2016 semi-finals should agree a new deal with Wales.
“I hope he stays because once he gets over the disappointment of not making the World Cup, he’ll realise what a tremendous job he’s done,” said Warnock.
“It was so close and then the challenge starts again. If he thinks he’s still got that team behind him, then I hope he stays.”
Coleman has begun informal talks with the FA of Wales over a new two-year contract that would see him attempt to guide Wales back to the 2020 European Championships.
But he is also understood to be on Leicester’s radar as they seek a replacement for Craig Shakespeare, who was sacked this week.
Former Fulham boss Coleman, 47, has previously claimed he wanted to return to club management after almost six years in the national job.
But Warnock – who was at Wales’ final World Cup qualifier that ended in a 1-0 defeat and play-off place for the Republic of Ireland – thinks Coleman still has a nation behind him.
“I’m sure with the job he’s done he’ll get one or two offers,” added Warnock.
“And it won’t be an easy decision financially because I’m sure he’ll get offered a lot more money elsewhere than he will by the FAW.
“I would miss the day-to-day training with the players you get at club football, but whether this Wales group makes up for that, only Chris will know.
“But I’ve never heard a national anthem sung like that before the Ireland game. I’ve never witnessed that before. It was special.
“Chris Coleman has generated that from a country that didn’t have much hope before he took them to the finals of the Euros.”
