The Dragons have continued to re-shape their squad for next season with the signing of Worcester Warriors back row forward Huw Taylor. The Welsh-qualified 21-year-old becomes the eighth new recruit for Dragons coach Bernard Jackman after agreeing a two-year deal. Taylor has made 24 appearances for the Warriors since coming through the English club’s academy, but has not been a regular this season with just one appearance in the Aviva Premiership.
Nick Williams will extend his stay at Cardiff Blues into a third season after signing a new one-year extension at the Arms Park. The New Zealander was out of contract at the end of this campaign, but has re-signed despite the uncertainty over the region’s coaching set-up. In his two seasons with the Blues so far, the 34-year-old No.8 has made 35 appearances and scored seven tries, providing the Blues with a ball-carrying presence they had lacked before his arrival.
Newport County manager Mike Flynn has earned the FA Cup reward he was hoping for with a glamour clash at home to Tottenham in the fourth round. Flynn had wished to be paired with Liverpool, his boyhood club, after his League Two side stunned Leeds United on Sunday with a 2-1 victory.
Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock took time out to watch Cardiff City’s under-23 team in Professional Development League action. Warnock and his staff assessed many trialists at development level this season and more were given their chance in a 1-1 draw against Millwall at Cardiff International Sports Campus. Former trialists Ciaron Brown and Ogo Obi have […]
Cross Keys gave coach Greg Woods the perfect send-off after 15 years in charge at Pandy Park with a memorable 21-16 victory over Pontypridd in the WRU National Cup. Woods is set to join Ebbw Vale this week and will be hoping that his new club doesn’t draw Cross Keys when the draw for Round 2 is made. The players formed a guard of honour for Woods at the end of an emotional game, but it was the result that made it. “It was a good old-fashioned cup tie where the underdogs came good. It was pretty emotional and there were a few tears from me at the end,” admitted Woods.
A Mid Wales youngster has been handed a huge boost in his ambitions to become a top class dinghy sailor thanks to a national scheme helping young talent progress in the sport.
What’s that thundering noise? Must be two sets of replacement front row forwards just about to come off the bench for both sides. Peter Jackson backs the calls from WRU chairman Gareth Davies to reduce rugby’s flood tide of substitutions in a bid to solve the game’s injury crisis. The first substitution at Test level took place 50 years ago next summer and involved one all-time great replacing another – Mike Gibson for an injured Barry John. What began at Loftus Versfeld during the South Africa-Lions series of 1968 as a trickle has long since turned into a flood of biblical proportion. Nobody could have envisaged the devastation that would be unleashed by the human equivalent of a buffalo herd stampeding through every Test match.

Coach Andrew Lord and his Devils have been in the final for three successive years and lifted the trophy twice, beating Sheffield Steelers in the final last season. Shawn McCoulsky wants Manchester United or Chelsea, while manager Mike Flynn hopes to be paired with Liverpool – but both Newport County heroes will be happy with any money-spinning, glory-hunting tie when the FA Cup fourth round draw is made on Monday night. Winning goalscorer McCoulsky and manager Flynn will join the rest of the Newport squad in waiting eagerly to see which opponent comes out of the hat following County’s memorable 2-1 victory over Leeds United at Rodney Parade on Sunday. It was the kind of FA Cup tie that reminds fans why they go to grounds on freezing afternoons in extra layers of thermal underwear instead of watching on TV.
Alfie Mawson has pledged his future to relegation-threatened Swansea City, despite being a £25m target for West Ham. The England U21 centre-back is wanted by Hammers manager David Moyes and has previously interested both Spurs and Southampton. But Mawson, 23, insists his priority is to stick with the suffering Swans during this transfer window and make sure they are still in the Premier League at the end of the season.
The Ospreys will check further on the fitness of young centre Owen Watkin on Monday following his neck injury suffered in their 29-28 weekend victory over the Cardiff Blues. The Wales international was hurt during the late stages of the Guinness Pro14 derby at the Liberty Stadium and taken to hospital for medical checks. Watkin was released home on Saturday night but the 21-year-old is due to undergo more tests at the Ospreys’ training base before it will be known whether the injury will rule him out of European Champions Cup and Six Nations contention over the next few weeks.
