Central defender Jarrad Wright returns to the Merthyr Town team for their EvoStik Southern League match at Farnborough Town on Saturday. It is Merthyr’s first Premier Division match since their win against Banbury almost two weeks ago because their scheduled home clash with Dunstable Town was postponed because of a frozen pitch. Wright was ruled […]
Chris Coleman admits there will be mixed memories when he returns to Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday. The former Wales manager comes home to Wales for the first time since leaving the job for a return to club management and the difficult task of keeping struggling Sunderland in the Championship. It was in the Welsh capital that Coleman savoured some of his best moments in charge of his country, memorable victories that took his team to the finals of Euro 2016.
Former England centre Brad Barritt has warned the Ospreys that Saracens intend to elbow them aside this weekend as they defend their European crown. Anything less than victory for Sarries will end their hopes of emulating Toulon by winning a third successive trophy, while the Ospreys also need a win to keep alive their hopes of progress. Both clubs have won twice and lost twice in Pool Two, but the Ospreys are in second spot behind leaders Clermont Auvergne thanks to the bonus points earned in back-to-back victories over Northampton.
Norwich City winger Yanic Wildschut has joined Cardiff City on loan until the end of this season. The Canaries paid £4m for the 26-year-old Dutchman when they signed him from Wigan Athletic a year ago, but he has made only 29 appearances since then. Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock has signed the former Heerenveen and Middlesbrough […]
Stephen Jones has been firing the Scarlets’ imaginations this week as they bid to follow the trail he blazed 16 years ago. Back in 2002, Llanelli knocked Bath out the Heineken Cup at the English club’s own home thanks to a commanding display and a deadly points surge inspired by their former No.10. A few things have changed since then. Llanelli are now the Scarlets, the Heineken Cup has lost sponsorship and is merely the European Champions Cup, and Jones is these days assistant coach at the region rather than the fulcrum who kicked eight penalties and a drop goal in a 27-10 victory on a rain-swept day at the Rec.
Welsh bobsleigher Bruce Tasker insists he can continue in the sport despite suffering the minor stroke that has denied him a chance to compete at next month’s winter Olympics. The 30-year-old Pembrokeshire athlete is expected to make a full recovery and has targeted a return to top level sport later in the year. Tasker suffered a stroke on January 4, meaning he will miss next month’s Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Carlos Carvalhal has claimed only a bid of £50m would tempt Swansea City into selling key defender Alfie Mawson. The England Under 21 centre-back has been heavily linked with Watford and West Ham in the January transfer window, while Celtic and Everton are also reportedly interested in the 23-year-old Londoner. Swansea signed Mawson from Barnsley for £5m in August 2016 and he has two-and-a-half-years left on his contract at the Liberty Stadium.
Welsh rally ace Matt Edwards will drive a Ford Fiesta R5 after his Swift Go Rally Team opted for M-Sport to run their campaign in the MSA Prestone British Rally Championship. Ever-improving throughout 2017, Llandudno-born Edwards took last year’s championship down to the wire.
Owain Doull feels all the experiences gained in his first season as a pro will stand him in good stead heading into 2018. By his own admission the Welshman enjoyed an ‘up and down’ campaign after turning pro with Team Sky.
Captain Jake Morissette played a leading role for Cardiff Devils in their Challenge Cup triumph against Guildford Flames. ‘Mo’ scored the first two Devils goals in a 6-2 win at Ice Arena Wales which completed a 9-5 quarter-final aggregate victory. The reward for ‘Mo’s’ men is a two-leg semi-final clash with Sheffield Steelers and head […]
Colin Caton will take charge of his 600th game as Bala Town manager on Saturday boosted by the news that his injury list finally appears to be easing. Caton will reach the landmark figure with a visit to Barry Town after coming through a testing festive period that saw them take in five games in […]
Remember the drop-goal? It was that famed piece of skill that Welsh fly-halves always seemed to have up their sleeve to get themselves, and their team, out of a tight spot. With the help of former Wales No.10 Paul Turner, Peter Jackson laments the disappearance of the art. At the Parc des Princes one sunny Sunday afternoon, Jannie de Beer launched five of them on a spiralling trajectory between the English posts. From start to finish, the bombardment lasted exactly 32 minutes. The Springbok fly-half-turned-evangelist struck more often in barely half an hour of that World Cup quarter-final almost 20 years ago than the PRO14 has managed all season. The drop-goal seems to be hurtling out of fashion faster than a Mitchell Starc bouncer.
Wales hopeful and Worcester Warriors wing Josh Adams has been named Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Month for December 2017 – and backed by Will Greenwood as well as his club coach to make a Six Nations breakthrough. Adams has been in stellar form for the Warriors, climbing to the top of the Aviva Premiership Rugby try-scoring charts with nine in the competition this season. World Cup winner Greenwood has described him as a wing with “raw power, real balance and deft feet” and now his Warriors coach Alan Solomons has said he’s ready to be called up by Warren Gatland.
Ben Clague, Jack Maclean, Will Riley, Jolyon Morgan and Mike Wood will all make their Wales senior debuts in the 2018 Men’s Indoor Hockey Championships III in Cyprus this weekend. Wales head to Bocosia with an exciting blend of youth and experience with Clague and co looking to make the step-up having played in the U21’s EuroHockey indoor tournament last January.
t may seem the wrong way round given Cardiff’s illustrious history, but it will be Merthyr who will travel to the Arms Park for the second round of the WRU National Cup as firm favourites to beat the home side and continue their incredible rise up Welsh rugby’s rankings. Last season’s Principality Premiership champions were beaten in the semi-finals of last year’s cup by eventual winners RGC 1404 and have their eyes on a league and cup double this campaign. They currently sit on top of the Premiership table.
Connor Roberts is aiming for a Swansea City debut at Newcastle on Saturday as the club continue to consider a move for Fulham full-back Ryan Fredericks. Roberts, 22, made his first team bow in last week’s FA Cup draw at Wolves and could be the solution again for manager Carlos Carvalhal with Kyle Naughton suspended and Angel Rangel out injured. The Swans are anxious to strengthen their full-back options in the January transfer window and are keen on Championship defender Fredericks, who has been rated at between £3m and £5m.
Entries to the 2018 Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon are flying out in record time – with more than 11,000 already sold. Raceday on Sunday October 7 is still 10 months away, but runners are racing to seal their place on the start line after last year’s event proved to be the biggest and best yet. Cardiff Half fever took hold in 2017 as 25,000 competitors signed up to take on the flat, fast, iconic course last Autumn.
Matt Pope has paid tribute to the Mayor of Cardiff – Canadian centre Joey Martin. The former Toledo Walleye player, voted Elite League Most Valuable Player in 2016, has scored 102 goals for Devils over his four seasons with the Welsh club. “We call Joey the Mayor of Cardiff because everybody here loves him,” said […]
The Dragons did not win many points in the regional derbies and their coach, it seems, did not win many admirers within rugby punditry circles for criticising his own players. Robin Davey, though, argues that years of under-achievement means the Dragons coach should be allowed to do it his way. Never a week goes by in Welsh rugby . . . only this time an Irishman has entered the fray and thrown the proverbial spanner into the works. Dragons head coach Bernard Jackman, imported from across the Irish Sea via Grenoble in south-east France to revive the flagging region, has stirred the pot – big time.
Christian Edwards will be demanding an improved performance as he takes his Cardiff Met side to Newtown tonight (7.45). Edwards was left disappointed after his side turned in a sub-par performance against Aberystwyth in front of the live television cameras on Saturday. A depleted Met side were held to a 1-1 draw after Eliot Edwards’ […]
