Entries Soaring For Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon

Entries to the 2018 Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon are flying out in record time – with more than 11,000 already sold.

Raceday on Sunday October 7 is still 10 months away, but runners are racing to seal their place on the start line after last year’s event proved to be the biggest and best yet. Cardiff Half fever took hold in 2017 as 25,000 competitors signed up to take on the flat, fast, iconic course last Autumn.

The race sold out with three months to spare, but entries to this year’s 15th anniversary edition looks set to fill-up even faster. A new year rush has seen entries soar as runners of all abilities from across Europe set their fitness goals for the new year.

It took until April 27 to reach the 11,000 mark last year as the 2018 edition heads towards the 25,000 capacity.

Those looking to start fresh after the Christmas binge by taking part in Wales’ largest mass-participation event are being urged to move fast before the race reaches capacity for a second year-in-a-row.

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive, Matt Newman, said: “We’ve been blown away by the interest in the 15th anniversary edition of the Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon. We are relishing the opportunity to bring another world class race to the streets of the Welsh capital, with some special additions to celebrate our milestone year.

“Last year 25,000 keen runners signed up and even more joined in the fun across a festival weekend in the heart of the city. Many were left disappointed after places sold out, so secure your place on the start line and join us on Sunday 7 October for what promises to be another unforgettable Cardiff Half.”

The 15th year of the Cardiff Half will be celebrated with a brand new commemorative medal and t-shirt as well as a host of activities in the build-up and across the Cardiff Half weekend.

Wales’ leading academic institution, Cardiff University, will once again be title sponsor for the event after playing a key role in cementing the Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon as the biggest mass-participation event in Wales.

Professor Colin Riordan, Cardiff University Vice-Chancellor, said: “It’s wonderful that so many people have already committed to the challenge of running in the Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon.

“As a University we greatly value the opportunities facilitated by our involvement in Wales’s biggest mass-participation event. Hundreds of our staff, students and alumni will again be running and volunteering for important roles on race day, but our partnership with the race goes much further.

“In the past couple of years the event has helped us to raise vital funds for our cancer, neuroscience and mental health research thanks to the efforts of our #TeamCardiff runners, as well as carry out meaningful research directly related to the event.”

Entries will once again be capped at 25,000 to maximise the experience for runners and spectators alike, so runners are encouraged not to waste any time if they want to be a part of the UK’s second largest half marathon.
