Penarth Hockey Club 1st XI continued their rapid rise up the UK ladder system with a win over Gloucester City on Saturday confirming a third successive promotion that will see the Bears playing just one step from the National League next season. PENARTH 3-2 Gloucester City Penarth hosted mid-table Gloucester City knowing that a win would mean another big step towards securing promotion to the Premiership – easily the highest echelon ever achieved by a Penarth side – but did so knowing that the absence of influential midfielder Ben Croxall would require a restructure of the team’s line-up and an unlikely repeat of earlier 9-2 victory over the border.
Aldi shopper Neil Warnock is aiming to toast three more points with a small shot of whisky when he returns from Brentford on Tuesday night. The Cardiff City manager takes his team to London on the back of six straight Championship victories – exceeding even the five successive wins that propelled their campaign at the start of the season. Warnock has claimed the likes of leaders Wolves – now just three points above the Bluebirds – and chasers Aston Villa and Fulham shop at Waitrose, compared with his visits to the cut price stores.

Sir Steve Redgrave has got a lot to answer for. Having inspired a new generation of British rowers to continue his golden quest for medals in a boat, he is also the man who sent one Welsh athlete’s career careering downhill . . . fast! Not that you will hear any complaints about that from Wales’ latest major medalist, Menna Fitzpatrick. The teenage skier won a silver medal in the women’s visually impaired super-combined which comes after she won bronze in the Super-G a couple of days ago. It means two medals in as many days for the Welsh woman at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang.
Warren Gatland will read the riot act to Liam Williams this week – but won’t drop the Saracens and British & Irish Lions full-back for the final game of the Six Nations against France this weekend. With Wales shooting for second place in the championship, Gatland knows there can be no margin for error against a power-packed French side that put England in their place in Paris on Saturday. Williams made a couple of first-half errors in the 38-14 win over Italy on Sunday and then picked up a yellow card for a head-high tackle on an Italian player when he was over his own line.
Cardiff City will go head-to-head with Swansea City in an FAW Cup final this season. The Bluebirds won 1-0 against Cyncoed to clinch their place against Swansea in the Women’s Cup final. Head coach Nick Wakley has named his women’s squad for the Commonwealth Games Sevens tournament which he reckons could be vital for the game’s future. Five of the 12-player squad that will travel to Australia’s Gold Coast are currently involved in Wales’ Women’s Six Nations campaign: Alisha Butchers, Sioned Harries, Hannah Jones, Jaz Joyce (all Scarlets), and Elinor Snowsill (Dragons).
Melvyn Evans won an event his own rally preparations company was sponsoring yesterday, when the 53-year old Lampeter driver mastered the damp and tricky conditions to win the Port Talbot MC-organised Melvyn Evans Motorsport Tour of Epynt by 39 seconds. Co-driven by Mark Glennerster, Evans repeated his 2012 victory on the event in the same car – a powerful four-wheel drive Subaru Impreza WRC S12b, which proved ideal for the rollercoaster Tarmac roads of the Epynt military range. He was equal fastest with Abergavenny’s Damian Cole on both the opening two stages, but a push on the twisty and technical Burma Road section was the key to success, as he put his foot down and gradually increased his lead over the seven stage event. Cole never put a foot wrong in his Get Connected Ford Fiesta WRC and, despite ripping the handbrake out of the floor on the opening loop of stages, the six-time MSA Asphalt Rally Champion (co-driven for the first time by Jamie Edwards) got his Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship campaign off to a strong start by finishing second.

Jenny Nesbitt will make her Commonwealth Games debut for Wales on the Gold Coast, after her late selection to run in the 10,000m. Nesbitt, who is based in Worcester, will join fellow female distance runners Elinor Kirk, Caryl Jones and Melissa Courtney in the Team Wales squad for the Gold Coast, Australia next month.

The Cardiff-born racer made the switch from a successful single-seater career at the start of 2017, and belied his lack of GT experience to star at the wheel of the team’s #22 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 over the five rounds of the Blancpain Series.
Wales’ leading gymnasts warmed up in style for next month’s Commonwealth Games by picking up medals at the British Championships in Liverpool. In the senior women’s apparatus finals, both Swansea’s Holly Jones and Cardiff’s Maisie Methuen struck gold to give themselves a huge boost prior to leaving for the Gold Coast. Jones won the Vault with 13.825 points after performing two strong vaults to finish ahead of Olympic and World Championship medallist Amy Tinkler, who scored 13.800.
Neil Warnock is threatening to demand a postponement of Cardiff City’s Good Friday match against Burton Albion. The Cardiff City manager is angry that the Football League have scheduled a full afternoon Championship fixture list for March 30 – just two days after a number of his players could be travelling back from international duty. Warnock’s fear is that the tight turnaround and fatigue may effect his possible four-strong international contingent and could undermine their promotion bid.
